1 Middle School Musical Theatre Project provides: an exciting opportunity to work with theatre professionals (directors and designers) an overview of musical theatre history a chance to sharpen 21 st century skills of Communication, Collaboration, Creative problem solving, and Connecting across cultures

2 Benefits Middle school students will: – Experience a broad range of musical theatre – Explore playwriting/script development – Examine and experience the creative process – Develop artistic skills, discipline, work ethic, respect for others – Collaborate as an ensemble from musician > performer > technician > assistant designer – Explore career options in the Arts and discover the Arts skills that translate to other professions – Build resilience and self-awareness Participating teachers will: – Be rejuvenated by working with students from across the district – Enhance their instructional skills by collaborating with other teaching artists – Practice and reflect on the creative process Community members will: – Participate in an innovative program that celebrates the creative process – Develop a greater appreciation for the arts and their value in supporting adolescents and preparing for success in the workforce

3 Method Online course and face-to-face workshop experiences will lead to the creation of an original musical that students will produce to: – reflect the creative process (playwriting, music/lyric composition, choreography, directing, lighting/scenic/sound/costume design) – demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of a successful artist (discipline, strong work ethic, willingness to take risks, ability to audition – promote the value of artistic skills in any profession they might choose

4 If you’re interested … Agree to review the materials posted online and respond to reflective questions – your responses will contribute to the crafting of our story (Mid-March – Mid-May) – 5 online sessions will include watching video clips, reading short passages, answering interest inventories, responding to reflective questions Agree to participate in the workshops/rehearsals/performances with the directors (musical & staging) or the technical director (June 25 – July 11) – Musical director will work with students to develop the musical score and storyline – these sessions will also include working with a staging director/choreographer – Technical director will work with students on design elements for lighting, sound, scenery, costumes

6 Schedule All students participate in the 5 online (asynchronous – on your own time) sessions between Mid-March & Mid-May Performers rehearse & Technicians work with designers daily from June 25 th > – (approximately 6 hours/day) Performances 7/10 and 7/11 (8:00 pm) @ Raleigh Little Theatre Amphitheare (Daniels Middle School – rain site) Strike following the final performance
