Reading the wrong message 1. If a girl wears sexy clothes: She thinks..... These clothes are cool, cute, fashionable, comfortable He might think …… She’s trying to turn me on. She is telling me she wants sex. She’s trying to tease me. 2. If a girl flirts. She thinks……. He is cute. I would like to get to know him better. He seems like a nice guy. I want him to notice me. He might think… She’s trying to turn me on. I bet she wants me to go to bed with her.

Reading the wrong message 3. If a girl says “no” when making out. She thinks……. I am happy with just kissing, and I don’t want to go further. Let’s just keep doing what were doing now. He might think……… “No” really means “yes”. She really wants to go further, but does not want to say so. 4. If a girl wears “sexy” smelling perfume. She thinks…… I smell good. I saw this ad and guys like you if you wear it. He might think….. She wore that perfume to try and turn me on and seduce me.

Reading the wrong message 5. If a girl uses “four letter” words. She thinks…… I can talk like I want. I am showing I am not a little kid. He might think…… If she talks about it, she must want it. 6. If a girl likes to party. She thinks…… I just want to have fun, but that doesn’t mean having sex. He might think….. Girls who like to party are “wild” and will have sex with you.

Reading the wrong message 7.If a girl lets a boy touch her breast. She thinks…… I want him to like me, so I will go along, but that’s all I want to do. He might think….. This is just the first step in going all the way. She wants to have sex. She is saying its “ok” to do what I want to do.

Rape  The law in Washington State  Rape is forced intercourse. (this includes vaginal, anal or oral penetration), however slight by a penis or by an object.  1 st degree rape – involves a deadly weapon, serious injury, kidnap or break in  2 nd degree rape – uses force and threatens bodily harm  3 rd degree rape – threatens harm to property

Statutory Rape  Consensual intercourse with a person below the age of consent  1 st degree – victim is under 11; offender is 13+  2 nd degree – victim is 11-13; offender is 16+  3 rd degree – victim is 14-15; offender is 18+

Date Rape  Being raped by a date. Frequently there have been at least 3 dates prior to the rape.  Victims are slow to report these.  Victims often mistakenly blame themselves.

Some rape statistics  1 out of 5 women are raped or attempted to be raped  50% raped are under 19  Women years old are more than 3 times more likely to be raped than any other age group.  It is estimated that only 40% of rapes are reported

Myths and Facts about Sexual Assault  Myth: Rape is motivated by sexual desire.  Fact: Rape is an act of violence. It is an attempt to control and humiliate using sex as a weapon.  Myth: Victims invite rape by dressing seductively.  Fact: Victims do not cause rape. It can happen to anyone no matter how he or she is dressed.  Myth: Most rapists only rape once.  Fact: Most rapists continue until caught. Since rape is one of the most unreported crimes a rapist’s career can be long.

Myths and Facts about Sexual Assault  Myth: Only women and girls are raped.  Fact: Men and boys are also victims of sexual assault.  Myth: The rapist is a healthy male, just a little out-of- control, provoked by a female.  Fact: The rapist attacks are of a desire for power, not out of an attraction to the victim.

How to protect yourself from rape  Check out a new date first  Avoid secluded places  Don’t get drunk or stoned  Don’t leave a drink unattended  Avoid being trapped in a car  Never walk alone at night  Be careful of weapons (guns).  Other ideas?

What to do if raped  Call the police.  Tell your parents, school counselor, family doctor. You need help.  Get medical attention.  Get tested for pregnancy or STD’s  Don’t bathe or shower or destroy clothes. The police will want evidence.
