A Look Into Your Relationships… Does your partner’s jealousy stop you from seeing your friends or doing things you enjoy? Does your partner make fun of you, insult you, or put your family or friends down? Do you make decisions TOGETHER? Do you feel comfortable saying “NO” to your partner? Has your partner ever threatened you to get what he/she wants?

Cycle of Abuse

Date Rape Rape is a form of assault involving non- consensual sexual intercourse. Even if the individuals involved know one another and have had sexual intercourse before, no one has the right to force a sexual act on another person.

Age of Consent The age of consent in New Jersey, for men and women is 16. This applies both to heterosexual and homosexual relationships. This means that at 16, a person in New Jersey may legally agree to have sex with an adult, in most cases. A different set of rules applies to situations where there is an imbalance of power. The age of consent is usually 18 or even 21. This is to prevent sexual exploitation of young people by adults. The New Jersey age of consent laws are complex. Under New Jersey law, a person aged 13 or older usually can consent to sex with someone who is less than 4 years older. Under New Jersey law, a 15-year-old girl could legally consent to sex with her 17-year-old boyfriend, but not his 35-year-old uncle. Under New Jersey law, no one under 13 may legally consent to sex, regardless of the circumstances. Age of consent is a moot point in cases where the individual is mentally retarded, mentally ill or otherwise incapable of giving informed consent.

Date Rape Alcohol and Drugs are often involved in cases of date rape. Although there are 3 typical “date rape drugs” – Rohypnol, GHB, Ketamine – Being under the influence of ALCOHOL or any DRUG puts you at a higher risk.

Protecting Yourself.. Don’t accept drinks from other people Open containers yourself Keep your drink with you at all times Stay in a group with your friends. Do not let friends leave alone. Don’t share drinks Don’t drink from large common containers Be knowledgeable. Don’t be Naïve.
