Evolution of Collaboration ACC has 1,200 thoracic surgeon members STS has 5,300 thoracic surgeon members ACC has longstanding and increasing collaborative relationship with STS ACC Presidents including James Dove, MD, MACC, Doug Weaver, MD, MACC, Fred Bove, MD, MACC and Ralph Brindis, MD, FACC provided tremendous support for Surgeon leaders and ACC collaboration activities

Why Collaborate? “Surgeons are cardiologists, with a different tool kit” - John Byrne, MD, FACC

Patient- Centered Management –CV Patients becoming more complicated –CV care will become more integrated as health care evolves –Surgeons and cardiologists share the same patients –Increases informed decision making and improves patient care –Required collaboration to pursue Health Policy innovations –Required collaboration to address Resource Utilization issues

Current ACC Collaborations ACC.10 –Featured Hybrid OR/Cath lab suite –Increased surgeon perspective due to efforts of ACC.10 Planning Committee Ongoing Surgeon Cardiologist educational programming –February 2009 CME program at Heart House –Annual Heart Valve Summit in conjunction with AATS –Additional education programming planned for 2011 and 2012 ASCERT – (STS and NCDR data link) –PCI Cath database with STS CABG database and Medicare claims data for longer term comparative effectiveness data Surgeon Representative on Interventional Scientific Council Surgeons Council Various Chapter Activities –See handout

Potential Chapter Opportunities Invite surgeon to serve on Chapter Council Invite surgeon to serve on Annual Meeting planning committee Include topics at Chapter meeting which highlight surgeon – cardiologist collaborations (reference sheet available) Invite Surgeon FITs to annual meeting Invite Chapter Surgeon Training Directors to meetings Consider collaborating with corresponding AATS/STS chapter

Discussion Is there value in having Surgeons participate in the House of Cardiology? Is there value in increasing involvement of surgeons at the Chapter Level? Are there any concerns to increased surgeon involvement? What are the barriers to increasing surgeon involvement? How can Surgeons Council support Chapter based collaborations?
