Hubble Mission Status Review Page 2 of 11 Space Telescope Science Institute Status as of: 12 August 2003 PROJECT: COS Highlights - Accomplishments SI News:  Thermal Vacuum Tests begun  Thermal Balance began 25 June;  Initial Alignment and Instrument Verification (Appendix A) completed 5 July! -~500 exposures obtained  Several hardware issues identified -Ion pressure gauge returned no telemetry (proposed solution: exchange pin settings on connectors) -Cal lamp converter voltages and current for Side 2 out of limits (extensive investigation to determine cause: Interpoint converter deformation under vacuum breaks electrical conductivity; all converters x-rayed to determine sufficient strain relief; proposed solution to add stiffener to top of all converters; presently in-work.)  Initial Geometric Correction table needs improvement  COS is achieving expected sensitivity  Focus and Resolution test stability presently being analyzed  Final Thermal Balance and comprehensive Science Cal (Appendix B) postponed -Present planned test period: 30 Aug through 30 Sep -STScI Instrument Scientists (Keyes, Sembach, Leitherer, Friedman, and Bohlin) will stand shifts during Thermal-Vac; Hartig will “float”

Hubble Mission Status Review Page 3 of 11 Space Telescope Science Institute Status as of: 12 August 2003 PROJECT: COS Highlights - Accomplishments (cont.) STScI Thermal-Vac Effort  Hartig, Leitherer, Sembach onsite at Ball during SI alignment and initial verification activities  All 479 files from initial verification activity have been processed through OPUS; Sembach worked minor keyword issues with Rose, Hodge, and CU  Friedman analyzed initial set of repeatability measurements  No changes between initial pair of datasets  Instituted weekly data analysis and science calibration planning telecons with CU STScI scheduling system  Flat field commanding re-work completed SMOV4 Activities  requirements completed  reviewed internally 17 July  successful Project review on 30 July  Special Commanding requirements definition in progress; revised timeline due to launch/SMGT schedule changes Commenced Integrated Pipeline Test planning McMaster continues to test APT observation specification (Phase II) software Spectroscopic APT/ETC development commenced
