Learning and Development PALS Context Pace of change for universities is driven by: Raised expectations from government, global competition, technology, the knowledge society, changing student expectations. This is not going to change!

White Paper Strong emphasis on world-class student experience Stronger agenda for enterprise and entrepreneurship Continued emphasis on world-class research and Grand Challenges Commitment to efficiency

What do we need in professional services? High levels of professional skill Awareness of business and value for money considerations Commitment to the aims of UCL and working in partnership with academics and others Flexibility and willingness to embrace change Strong customer awareness An improved understanding of the activities and performance of our staff

Vision for Learning and Development Staff take ownership of development needs Development available in timely fashion and of high quality Effective conversations on career development Taking a holistic view across the institution, will require flexibility for staff and managers Recognition that professional development takes many forms

What does success look like? Good internal competition for roles UCL staff move on to senior roles elsewhere Skills shortages not on risk register Relevant staff survey scores best in class High levels of customer satisfaction Benchmarking indicates good value for money

Some tips based on experience Don’t expect others to manage your career Don’t expect a single institution to provide a career for life Pay attention to boss management Think about your development needs for the next job Look at jobs available elsewhere

Tips 2 Appraisal is not a once a year discussion Practice interviews Further study is useful if applied Keep informed about the sector Build and nurture your peer network Learn on the job
