While I Was Sleeping Chapter 1

Getting to India when the chapter starts, what is Friedman describing? Is Bangalore India, the new India, an American style city in India, or simply Bangalore? when Friedman was “sleeping” he was focused on the middle east and issues of economic integration and its tension with identity/nationalism

Moore’s Law (somewhat) Moore (one of Intel’s founders) proposed in the 1960’s that the number of chips on a circuit would double every 12 months a (later) offshoot was that the power of a computer would double every 18 months CPU power internal transmission (bus) speeds transmission speed to external devices

the doubling of power in 18 months is for a constant price conversely, for the same amount of money you can purchase a computer twice as powerful in 18 months don’t take a nap

Globalization version 1 – from Columbus “finding” the “new world” to 1800 version 2 – 1800 to 2000 version 3 – 2001 to today what is the scale of resources needed for each version? implications?

Information Revolutions the spoken word the written word the printed word the technology enhanced word processing (some say we are now in) the mobile word

Outsourcing knowledge work manufacturing services (some types)

Prophetic quote in the book Jaithirth Rao, page 15 “We must be honest about it. We are in the middle of a big technological change, and when you live in a society that is at the cutting edge of the change [like America], it is hard to predict (the future). It’s easy to predict for someone living in India. In ten years we will be doing a lot of the stuff that is being done in America today.”

Information is a Piece of Almost All Goods and Services information processing is easily outsourced parallel vs sequential work for boss/subordinate task structure well understood & communicated the best people to do information processing are those who are more/most highly educated

change is hard change is hardest on people caught by surprise the U.S. has been sleeping on two critical issues related to globalization. First, information technology infrastructure. Second, higher education levels that are globally competitive.

Why are non-US workers choosing to work in their home countries for multinational firms when not long ago they all wanted to come to the US (at least for their education)?

what is meant by “remote?” geography? time zone? language/culture? difference in occupation/education?

the natural progression of outsourcing is a simple climb up the food chain unskilled workers skilled workers knowledge workers and professionals knowledge creators & users owners

Flatburgers & Fries a disengagement from the part of the product that is information system based versus physical good based the McDonalds application looks at increased accuracy of order matchup by use of photos in the drive-thru (reduced from 4% to 2% in order errors)

What is the class opinion of the Bill Ardolino “InDC Journal” story?
