PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS LESSON #4

OBJECTIVES Students will know the importance of health education Students will know what our nations health goals are Students will know the importance of becoming health literate

IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH EDUCATION Today, America spends $2.3 trillion each year on health care. Much of that could be avoided if people made healthier decisions about the way they live Health Education: Providing accurate health information and teaching health skills to help people make healthier decisions.

Healthy People: Nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the united states. See page 22, figure 1.10 Healthy people 2020 goals: 1.Promote best possible health to end preventable death, illness, injury, and disability. 2.Eliminate health disparities 3.Make wellness a way of life and enhance quality of life 4.Promote healthy places and environments. BECOMING HEALTH LITERATE Health Literacy: refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services, and to use these resources to promote one’s health and wellness. Qualities of a health-literate individual include: A critical thinker and problem solver: a person can develop evaluation criteria for health information before making decisions. A responsible, productive citizen: person chooses safe, healthful, and legal behaviors and show respect for others A self-directed learner: person who searches health information to make health related decisions. They determine if its reliable, accurate, and current. An effective communicator: person is able to express health knowledge in a variety of ways.
