S2 Options Making an Informed PE Choice

Available Courses in S3/S4 National 5 (PE Studies) Core PE

National 5 Physical Education The course is a combination of practical and theory work (3 periods). We spend 2 periods a week in the practical setting, learning through doing the activities. We reinforce our understanding of the activities through spending 1 period a week in the classroom, writing about the activities. The final grade is a combination of practical performance (60%) and your mark in the S4 written project (40%). The S4 written project will require pupils to produce a report on a chosen activity, which will involve extended essay writing.

National 5 PE Activities The course is divided into 3 areas of study; – Fitness – Skills – Tactics (Basketball / Badminton / Football / Gymnastics / Table Tennis / Hockey / Athletics) Pupils will study a minimum of 5 activities from the above list to cover the 3 areas of study. Your 2 strongest practical performance grades go towards your course pass. Your final practical performance mark will be assessed from 1 activity in a ONE OFF performance (60% of final course award).

Benefits of National 5 PE National Qualification. The PE Studies course pass rate was 99% in 2013, with 71% of candidates gaining an ‘A’ award. Pathway to studying Higher PE and potential entry to sports related further education / career. More in-depth analysis of activities and opportunity to develop more complex skills in each activity. Improved understanding of sports physiology, skill development and team structures / tactics.

Core Physical Education During 3 rd year, you continue following a similar course as you have experienced during S1/S2. The course focuses solely on practical performance and there is no national qualification attached to the course. The main aim of S3/S4 Core PE is to refine your physical skills. Also to ensure you are equipped, both physically and mentally, to lead healthy and active lifestyles. During 4 th year you are able to select your preferred activities.

How to Choose National 5 PE National 5 PE is available in columns G and J on your S3 Option form. Choosing National 5 PE in column G allows you to continue with Core PE (6 periods of PE a week!). Choosing National 5 PE in column J means that you will have no Core PE and also be doing a 9 th Intermediate subject. The following slides detail the 3 options you have when making your PE choice.

Option 1 – The Dream Study Both National 5 PE and Core PE Nat 5 PE Core PE

Option 2 – Study 9 National 5 Subjects National 5 PE Instead of Core PE Nat 5 PE

Option 3 - Continue with Current PE Experience Just Core PE Core PE
