Shiloh By: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Aladdin Paperbacks Copyright 2000

This story takes place in the summer. This time period was important to the story because if it was during the school time, it would be a lot harder for Marty to go up to the hill. He wouldn’t see Shiloh every day. Also if the story took place during school time, Marty might not have found Shiloh. The main location of where the story takes place is the hill behind Marty’s house in West Virginia. The location was important to the story because without the hills behind Marty’s house, there would be no place to hide Shiloh. Without a place to hide Shiloh, Judd would find and hurt Shiloh.

Marty The most important character in the story is Marty. This characters main goal was to try and save Shiloh and not hurt him.

Judd Travers Judd Travers the one that had Shiloh. Judd didn’t like Shiloh because he ran off too much. Marty told Judd that he would take care of Shiloh if Judd wouldn’t hurt him anymore. Marty's dad told Marty, ‘’ If you want the dog, you have to earn the money to take care of him.”

Doc. Murphy Doc. Murphy is a doctor and he helps everybody in town. Since Shiloh got hurt, Doc. Murphy has been trying too help him for about four days. Doc. Murphy is a very hard worker, so that’s why it only took him four days to cure Shiloh.

Problem/Solution The biggest or most important problem and conflict in the story was that Marty can not get Shiloh. This was a problem because Judd thinks that Marty is not responsible for having a dog. The problem was solved when Marty did all the work trying to save Shiloh after he got chewed up.(Marty didn’t tell Judd because he thought that Judd was going to shoot him and Shiloh.)

Vocabulary Responsible- If someone is responsible for something, he or she has to do it, and it is the person’s fault if it goes wrong. ‘’The boy was not responsible enough to have a dog.’’ Worker- A worker is someone who works. ‘’The doctor is a very hard worker.’’ Enthusiasm- a strong feeling of excitement and interest about something. ‘’ I ask, trying to dig up the least little bit of enthusiasm.’’ Recovers- to return to a normal condition or position “ The patient recovered faster than I thought he would.’’ Whopping cough- an infectious disease that makes children and babies cough violently and breath noisily ‘’ The boy had a whopping cough.’’
