3 What makes me ME?

4 Mill’s Story. In a pond not far from here hatch some beautiful tadpoles. They were all different and all special. One little tadpole was very different from the rest. Mill was small with a little tail that didn’t seem to work in the same way as the other tadpoles. Some things seemed harder for her to do.

5 One day the strong tadpoles Tad and Tod decided to play a game. Do you want to play swim chase?

6 The other tadpoles often left Mill out thinking she could not keep up and play with them. They did not think about what might help her to join in. Do you want to play swim chase? No there is no way that short tail can keep up…let’s go! Shall I ask Mill to come?

7 How do you think Mill is feeling?

8 Each day the tadpoles grew and each day they tried a new adventure. Each day Zig-Zag asked if Mill could join in. Each day the answer was no! Mill quietly swam away and practiced her unique way of swimming on her own.

9 What could Zig-Zag do?

10 As time went by the little tadpole grew and grew. They started to change. Their tails shrank and strong, powerful legs began to grow.

11 Mill changed too her tail got shorter and she also grew legs only not all her legs were strong and powerful. Still she had to work extra hard to develop her own unique way of swimming around the pond.

12 It did not take long before the other little frogs started to explore their surroundings.

16 How do you think Mill is feeling now?

17 What should Zig-Zag do?

18 Zig-Zag could not listen to the other frogs being mean to Mill any more. She knew what she had to do. She took a deep breath and bravely told Tad and Tod to stop being so unkind.

19 Then she swam away back to Frog school she knew she had to tell a grown up what had been going on.

20 Zig-Zag felt better after she had talked to an adult. She swam off to find her friend Mill to check she was ok. She found her friend swimming in a most unique way, a way that only Mill could swim. Zig-Zag had not seen this type of swimming before. Mill was swimming round and round home rock in a perfect circle.

22 Before long all the little frog noticed that Mills unique way of swimming meant that she could swim a perfect circle. They were very impressed, as they often hit the rock when they tried to swim around it. They began to tell Mill how impressed they were.

23 How do you think Mill is feeling now? What might she want to say to the other little frogs? What do you think Miss Frog said to Tad and Tod? What do you think Tad and Tod should do now?

24 Do you know anyone like Tad and Tod? Do you know anyone like Mill? If you were in Zig-Zags’ position what would you do? How might the story of Mill help you at school? Think about the story and the characters in it.

Your friend is calling someone who walks in a different way in nasty names? 10. Someone is copying the way that somebody speaks and is making fun of them? 11.Someone who uses crutches is showing you how to use them as a sword?

28 What can make people different? We have all looked at what makes us unique Some children have particular things that may mean the way they move, communicate, learn, see or hear may be different from the way that most people to these things. Sometimes we call these things a disability – because they can make life different and sometimes harder for them.

30 How does it affect them? What does it mean they have to do differently? Do they use any equipment to help them? Do you know someone who has a disability?

36 SEND: Developing Effective Anti- Bullying Practice From 2013 – 2015 the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) will be working in partnership with AfA3As, Contact a Family, Mencap and the Council for Disabled Children on an exciting new programme of work to reduce the incidence and impact of bullying on children with special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities in schools. We plan to do this by: – improving practice in schools – lead by Achievement for All s; – early intervention through support for parents and carers – lead by Contact a Family and working with Mencap; – disseminating information to the wider sector – lead by ABA; and – ensuring our training and resources are influenced and informed by children and young people with SEND themselves – lead by Council for Disabled Children This project is funded by the Department for Education.
