Laulima Workshop for Instructors Solutions to help you engage your students through Laulima

Engaging the students When the instructors want to engage the students in face to face classes they will often start by asking the students to respond to various questions. However, in the online setting, it can be challenging to interact with each other without being able to see or hear reactions. The goal of this instruction is to facilitate the instructors to know which tools to use in Laulima to generate enthusiasm in e 3 learning.

Blogs In Laulima, this tool is used by participants as an online journal in which classmates can read and comment on each entry.

Blogger In Laulima, this tool is used by participants as an platform for them to share their thoughts and ideas with their classmates.

Chat Rooms Participants can have real-time conversations. Instructors can use this tool as a space for holding “Office Hours.” Collaboration groups can be scheduled to meet in the chat rooms at different times.

Discussion Discussions can be “threaded” or “flat” discussions. Participants can post their own topics for discussion. Categories can be created to “chunk” by topic.

Discussion & Private Messages This tool allows participants (Instructors and Students) to send private messages as well as to respond to the posts in the public discussion. The instructor has the ability to post instructions that cannot be edited by the students. Instructors can set privileges for the students to either “read and reply” which creates two-way communication or “read, reply, and post” where interaction and collaboration are generated.

Forums This tool is linked to the Resources and Gradebook tools so students can be graded and receive instructor comments based on their participation in the discussions. Forums can be “threaded” so participants can see the progression of the discussion. The WYSIWYG interface, which allows rich text, plain text, and HTML editing, can be used to compose messages. Attachments can be added to messages and forums by uploading the files or URL of the file. Forum statistics can also be used to monitor the participation level of individual students. Instructors can import forums and topics from other sites. Groups can be set up to participate in specific discussions with access denied to non-group members.

Wiki This tools allows for the use of multiple file formats to be integrated including images, text, links. For instructors with limited technical know-how, this tool allows you to create and modify web pages with ease. Collaboration on documents and sharing of information is possible. Page history and information can be viewed to look at revisions. Permissions can be controlled by the instructor to allow participants to read, create, and update pages.

Scenario 1 You are the instructor for ETEC 407. You want your students to introduce themselves to the class via a video they will upload. You want students to comment on each others videos and get to know each other before class starts. Which tools will allow the students to upload files and comment on each others introductions?

Video Instructions about Introductions Here’s some video instruction:

Scenario 1 The following tools will allow the students to upload files and comment on each others introductions: Click on multiple answers from the list. A. Blog B. Blogger C. Chat Room D. Discussion E. Discussion and Private Messages F. Forums G. Wiki Good! You can upload and comment on files using a blog Good! You can upload and comment on files using Blogger Try again, you cannot upload and comment on files using the Chat Room Good! You can upload and comment on files using Discussion Good! You can upload and comment on files using Discussion and Private Messages Good! You can upload and comment on files using Forums Good! You can upload and comment on files using the Wiki

Engaging Introductions Example: Non-example: This prompt is very detailed about what students should include in their introductions and the students reciprocated their instructor’s efforts by writing a very detailed introduction. This prompt is not detailed about what students should include in their introductions and the lack of direction shows in the student’s response.

Scenario 2 You are an instructor for BIO 111. You want to establish “Online Office Hours” where your students can meet you to have a real time conversation about the topic of the week. Which tool is preferable to have a real time conversation with your students?

Scenario 2 The preferable tool for having a real time conversation with your students is: Click on an answer from the list. A. Blog B. Blogger C. Chat Room D. Discussion E. Discussion and Private Messages F. Forums G. Wiki Try again, a blog is asynchronous. Try again, blogger is asynchronous. Try again, discussion is asynchronous. Try again, discussion and private messages is asynchronous. Try again, forums are asynchronous. Try again, a wiki is asynchronous. That’s right, Chat Rooms are real time.

Engaging Students in the Chat Room Example: Non-example: An effective “online office hour” via chat room through Laulima site can provide a great chance for students and instructors to communicate with each others. In this non-example, the instructor didn’t respond to the students at all. The student cannot get an answer to their question. This non- example showed how ineffective instruction will occur if the instructor does not respond in real- time during the online office hours.

Audio on Using the Chat Room Here’s an example of introducing the chat room:

Scenario 3 You are an instructor for PSY 201. You want to give your students private feedback based on their responses to a discussion topic. What would be the best tool for this purpose?

Scenario 3 The best tool for sending private feedback on discussion responses is: Choose the best answer from the list. A. Blog B. Blogger C. Chat Room D. Discussion E. Discussion and Private Messages F. Forums G. Wiki Try again, comments on a blog can be read by anyone Try again, comments on blogger can be read by anyone Try again, comments in Chat Rooms can be read by anyone logged into the site Try again, comments in Discussion can be read by anyone That’s right, Private Feedback can be sent through Private Messages using this tool Try again, comments posted on a wiki can be read by anyone Try again, comments posted in Forums can be read by anyone

Engaging Discussions Example: Non-example: This example showed us a well- organized discussion topic which included concrete information and questions to lead the target students to explore their ideas and think about how to answer the question in an effective way. This non-example indicated that student are not well participated if the instructor didn’t provide detailed and actively instructional activity on the discussion topic. Lack of engaging topic will leads a ineffective and negative feedbacks.

Audio Clip Here is a sample of how to properly talk to the class about Private Messages.

Thank You! Mahalo!
