UNIDO’s Cleaner Production Programme The UNIDO CP Programme was established in 1994 and the results achieved include: Establishment and operation of 35 National Cleaner Production Centres and Programmes in developing countries and countries in transition, out of which 7 in the Latin American region (Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Cuba); Establishment of a Regional Cleaner Production Programme in Latin America, with 14 participating countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Peru); Within the framework of the Regional Programme, development of a Knowledge Management System.

Activities of the CP Centres Since 1994, the UNIDO CP Programme established 35 National Cleaner Production Centres and Programmes delivering the following services: FIRST PHASE Awareness raising and information dissemination Training programmes for specific target groups Technical assistance at plant level (quick scans and in-plant assessments) CP policy advice SECOND PHASE Continuation of services of First Phase EST development and transfer and promotion of CP investment and business cooperation proposals Combination of CP with related services (Eco-design, LCA, CSR, EMS, MEA, quality assurance, Chemical leasing...)

– 2004: CP – EE Project Cleaner Production and energy efficiency (CP – EE) in-plant assessments and training In 18 companies Results: 80,000 t annual CO 2 emission reduction Savings: 2.9 M USD/yrInvestment: 675,000 USDPayback: 3 months 2003 – 2005: “Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction from Industry in Asia and the Pacific (GERIAP)“ Regional programme (9 countries), VNCPC was National Focal Point for Vietnam CP – EE in-plant assessments and training In 4 companies in Vietnam (all results: Vietnam only, 4 companies) Results : 18,000 t annual CO 2 emission reduction Savings: 560,000 USD/yrInvestment: 400,000 USDPayback: 8.5 months GERIAP Toolkit on Energy Efficiency in Industry ( 2005: Energy Efficiency Improvements for Process Heat Production Energy efficiency improvement in boilers Training workshop for consultants; energy assessments in 3 companies Since 2006: VNCPC is now providing CDM services for interested partners and clients… Energy efficiency at VNCPC

Objectives Regional Programme in Latin America Develop an efficient mechanism to facilitate the active cooperation, coordination and exchange of information and know-how between the CP Centres and Programmes applying Knowledge Management as an exchange tool. Define and implement joint CP project in priority sectors for the region and promote the development and transfer of best practices among the participating countries. Promote the incorporation of new members to the Regional Network and stimulate the demand of the industrial and governmental sector for Cleaner Production.
