MORE ON NARRATIVE It has a beginning, middle, and end. It tells the order in which events take place. It is told from a particular point of view. Be interesting. Catch the attention of the reader so that they can’t put the story down.

Expository is just a fancy word that has to do with explaining a subject/topic. It could be as simple as instructions on how make a cake, put a computer together, or put a bicycle together. An expository essay, then, is a written explanation of a subject. The goal is to share information with the reader.

Explanations can be presented in a variety of methods, such as the following: Explain a step-by-step process Compare and/or contrast two items Explain with examples Divide and classify Identify a cause-effect relationship

Write simply. Say exactly what you see, feel, hear, and so on. Be specific when you write. For example, instead of tree, say what kind of tree. Good descriptive writing depends heavily on observing and recollecting vivid moments. As you observe an event, jot down everything that you observed. Push yourself to remember as many details as you can. It may help to close your eyes and bring yourself back to that earlier moment. Remember, you are the writer who observes — you see the people and the scenes. You have the power of the word and can shape the images that you present. Draw upon your knowledge of facts, your memories, and your imagination. I think of these three as "The Known," "The Remembered," and "The Imagined."

Keep a sharp eye on every aspect of your daily life. Even the most routine events are worth observing. Whenever possible, make quick notes of what you observe. Later, you can refer to these notes when writing your finished work. Look very carefully at what's happening around you. Take note of "who," "what," "when," "where," "how," and "why." Carry a notebook with you at all times. That way you'll never miss an important moment. Be a detective. Pretend you will have to present this information in court. Get all the details. They may decide the outcome of the case.

Why write to persuade? The goal of "argument" is to win acceptance of your ideas when others, for whatever reason, don't agree with you. The point of a persuasive paper is not to show how mad we are. The argument itself makes us take a closer look at our own and others' ideas more carefully. Writing a persuasive paper helps us to look at evidence, state ideas more clearly, to consider the claims of the opposition fairly, and to justify our own position.

The purpose of persuasive writing is to assert an opinion which you are going to defend and to offer supporting evidence (data) in order to convince the reader to agree with you. In the process, you deal with opposing views, thus convincing him/her of the superiority of your argument. Additionally, a good writer may present emotional as well as rational appeal. All of your reasoning should lead to a logical conclusion. If your subject matter warrants a change, you will offer a solution to the status quo in a proposal. Persuasive essays should include documentation which will require research. By investigating your topic and including supporting comments from authorities, you give credibility to your argument.
