Step Two: Prepare for Debate Remember, MUN is analogous to the United Nations Choose a country to represent and research it (Peru/India) Establish what committee you would like to be on (SPECPOL) Determine the issue that you want to voice your country’s position on (depends on committee)

Step Three: Research the Issue Use news and media sources UN Economic and Social Development page Visit Non-Governmental Organizations’ websites to get informed and think of solutions to the issue Find evidence and statistics that the issue is apparent

Step Four: Write a Position Paper What is the international issue? How does it affect your country? Use specific statistics/events/quotes from country leaders What can your country do to get involved? Propose resolutions and be creative!

Step Five: Debate Etiquette Hold country plaque up when speaking Decorum!! Decorum!! (gavel slam) Point of... Parliamentary Inquiry, Parliamentary Privilege Wear Western Business Attire Motion to... Adjourn meeting, Table debate, Suspend debate, Appeal the Chair’s Decision

Step Six: Debate Away!!! Setting the Agenda Formal Debate: speakers list Informal Debate: moderated caucuses (short speeches), unmoderated caucuses ( debate recess) Debate with other countries the issue and possible resolutions

Step Seven: Resolutions and Change Resolve the international issues in a paper Preambulatory clauses: set the stage, emphasize the problem Operative clauses: take action, make change Use the support of NGO’s in the Resolution Paper Use the past to benefit the future Vote on a paper that will make positive change of the issue

CHANGE is the Goal Change is the goal of the UN and MUN We took a perfectly real global issue and hatched valid resolutions to make change in our world!!
