 How are you persuaded to buy a new pair of shoes?  What goes in to you deciding to purchase those shoes?

 Average teen is exposed to over 3000 advertisements per day!!!!!!!!!  One Goal = PERSUASION  Biased (one-sided) messages designed to appeal to your emotions  Variety of techniques…

 Someone famous endorses/supports a product, or idea. Person could be famous, knowledgeable, or an ordinary person claiming the product worked for them.  People are typically paid to giver their endorsements…Are they always an expert?

 Going along with the rest of the crowd. March Madness is coming up. How many of you will jump on the bandwagon of a certain team??  People want to be on the winning team… These messages make people feel pressured.  McDonald’s: Billions and Billions Served

 Exactly what it sounds like…  Using negative words and bad names to create negative emotions for people, ideas, or institutions. Think politics…How do we portray other country leaders that we do not like?

 Always shows the subject of the message in a positive light. Very little information provided. Most of the time is visual.

 Using facts and figures to show one side as better than the other.  Designed to make you think you’re hearing both sides….but….  Not even close!!

 Designed to show a product or person is “just like you.” Ordinary person encouraging you to try a product. Politicians photographed having lunch among ordinary citizens.  The goal is to gain your trust.

 Using your feelings about one thing to persuade you about another. Can use a positive or negative image…Images could be symbolic or cute/lovable.
