BEING AN INTERN (AND GETTING THERE)

Cover Application process Receiving your offer and your options. Last 6 months at Bond…… Intern What to expect Leave and rotations What to do Surviving Life with money

Application process 16 hospitals (2014) Number in preference order (1-16) Hot Tip #1 - Nothing strategic about what you put first – go for your number 1 preference first Exception – Internationals……. Balance with next preferences May be worth while putting next preference of lower demand hospital vs Placing in actual order of what you want (even though next couple may be oversubscribed) as rollback preferences come into play.

Live feed – don’t recommend you get sucked into it. Hot tip # 2 – a call and or visit can pay huge dividends in some circumstances Interstate Each has its own system and requirements Victoria individual hospital applications +/- interviews NSW same as QLD – basic information, preferences +/- CV and references. WA – heartfelt essays about why you want to work over west. Tasmania & ACT– ?

Offers…… And your options Either 1. Get first preference – happy days Don’t be the person who isn't happy with first preference ACCEPT button 2. Don’t get your first preference Get another preference – usually down the list Options – ACCEPT, TENTITIVELY ACCEPT TA: means you are considered for rollback (next slide) Or – DECLINE only if you have: accepted another offer interstate or decided to be unemployed

Rollback 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th ………….. How-ever-many-th round offers until all positions filled. Rollback is not an online process – requires phone communication. This is the part where you have to be ready Overseas/unreachable….. Phone rings – you have 30 seconds to say yes or no, be prepared.

Last 6 months at Bond Fun, more time than 4 th year Rotations – Critical care, GP, ED, Selectives Learn real stuff June/July exams – not as bad as end 4 th year November exams – enjoyable finish Makes sure you enjoy the extra time.....

Interness What to expect Long hours… but maybe not as many as you would think Time efficiency and prioritization Responsibility = biggest change Fit in life-stuff successfully Decide on what you like doing outside work and fit it in. Making real cash money, and planning ways to spend it Reality – paid to talk to people, help them out, put your knowledge into practice.

Leave and rotations Will be asked to preference your two non-compulsory rotations. Think carefully with near and distant future goals in mind. Give reasons on your form for your choices – be enthusiastic and back them up Leave Paid – awesome Hot tip #3: Again give a good reason – conference, wedding, Yacht week, childbirth

Final words Enjoy this year Next year is even better (so far)
