Subject Leader Development Meeting March 2012

0915 – 1000   Session 1- Local and national updates   National Curriculum update   Ofsted   GCSE   Session 2 – Awarding bodies presentations   AQA – Alan Walton ‘Pupil Performance & QWC’  ‘  Edexcel - Rob Cackett ‘GCSE2010 AO2/AO3 analysis’ Programme

Objectives   To be updated as to developments at a local and national level in Mathematics   To have a better understanding of GCSE performance from Edexcel and AQA and consider the implications for your pupils

Starter: Magic Star Puzzle

GCSE Modular & Linear Update   It will still be possible to enter pupils before the end of Key Stage 4   Edexcel, OCR will be offering March 2013 entry (2010 specification)   November re-sits will be available (Mathematics & English only)   Students will be allowed to re-sit linear GCSEs as many times as they like or need to - there will be no limit. The best grade students achieve will count.

Points for Consideration   June 2012   Nov 2012   March 2013 (Ed, OCR)   June 2013   ….? Who will be entered? For what? When will you move to linear? SoW – where next?

Ofsted   Satisfactory is no longer good enough   New subject specific guidance for January 2012, no changes in Teaching and Learning (except for inadequate)   If achievement grade is inadequate, then overall effectiveness will be inadequate   Curriculum now sits under Leadership and Management

Achievement   Greater focus on how schools are narrowing gaps in attainment and progress between different groups of pupils and all pupils nationally   Achievement of different groups of pupils, including those with disabilities and special needs remains at the heart of the judgement   Learning and progress are key drivers of achievement, and will be considered together with attainment

‘A good education for all’ published February 2012 Consultation on school inspection proposals

Emphasis on Literacy, Numeracy & Communication Skills   What is happening in your school to ensure/promote literacy, numeracy and communications skills across the curriculum?

RAISEonline Changes to RAISEonline mainly result from the 2010 schools White Paper: The Importance of Teaching. The major change is the removal of contextual value added (CVA) measures. Other changes relate to:  value added (VA) indicators  expected progress reports  Narrowing the gap reporting  school context review  target setting  SEN/low attainers.

Unpicking L6   Two half days focusing on number & algebra and data handling   Emphasis on levelness rather than passing an assessment – what makes a level 6?   Encouraged schools to liaise with pupils’ Year 7 destination school   Over 70 delegates attended so far

National Curriculum Update   Introduction of National Curriculum delayed until first teaching September 2014 (possibly staggered implementation)   National Curriculum review need to align with ‘radical’ GCSE reforms
