Lessons in IT Transformation Larry Bonfante

Leading the Process of Change Involve people in creating the vision Sell the need for change Connect the vision to people’s jobs Get the right people on the train and the wrong people off the train! Break the plan into bite size actionable chunks Celebrate success and communicate progress

“It’s the business stupid!” The purpose of IT - drive business value The foolishness of alignment Three questions: –What outcomes are we striving for? –How do my efforts help us achieve them? –If our objectives don’t support these key outcomes, why are we doing them? No project without a customer!

Communication If you think you have communicated enough, communicate some more! The importance of listening “What language are you speaking?” –Can you spot the CIO in the boardroom? Tailor your message to your audience The need for marketing Communicating tough issues

Relationship Management Focus on helping others succeed Be a team builder – give others the credit Building credibility –Say what you mean & mean what you say! What’s in it for them? Perception is Reality Leaders serve –When you’re a leader, it’s never about you!

Developing People Talents/passion of your people - your only real competitive advantage! Developing leaders is your top priority Leading “persons” People don’t leave because they’ve had the opportunity to grow and develop, they leave because they haven’t! Leverage people’s unique strengths Work with what you have – Pat Riley… Recognize your people’s efforts & successes

Partnering for success Developing a partnership with your team –How many of you have “subordinates”? –QB not coach! Creating win-win scenarios with vendors Shared accountability – our organization Creating winning partnerships –Hockey MVP –World Series rings

Qualities of Great Leaders Authenticity Humility A strong bias towards action Receptive to honest feedback Empower the people around them Genuinely care about people Give people the credit for success Take responsibility for failure Integrity - What you do speaks so loud I can’t hear what you say!
