1.Families and Literacy… 2. Chatting together as much as possible as part of normal daily life. 1. Children learn much about reading and writing as pre-schoolers by observing the reading and writing that occurs in their families. They then begin to reading and writing as part of their home experiences (Heath, 1983; Taylor, 1983).

Continues … 3. Oral storytelling - sharing stories at home about everyday life, past experiences etc. 4. Reading and writing with the children. 5. Watching television together, such as — ‘Playschool’ and other children’s programs. 6. Reading bumper stickers, car number plates, street signs, store logos.

2. Families and Science… 1. According to educational experts from the National Science Foundation ("Helping Children Learn at Home," 1997), "young children are natural mathematicians and scientists" because of their curiosity and their desire to explore and experiment. 2. When parents encourage their children to ask questions and help children explore and discover the natural world, they are helping build an interest in math and science.

Continues … 3. Puzzles help children learn to solve problems as well as learning about shapes, sizes, and colors. For toddlers, make sure the puzzle has some large pieces. You can make your own puzzle by pasting one of your child's photo onto a piece of cardboard, then cutting it into large pieces.

3. Families and Mathematics… 1.Children will be learning math and enjoying it too! 2.Children can explore some fascinating mathematical possibilities in the world around them every day, math can be found outdoors in nature: look for symmetry in leaves; count the number, sizes, and kinds of trees on your street; and look at the various shapes and patterns of blooming flowers.

Continues … 3. Plant a garden with your child: Measure the space or container, determine where the plants will get sunlight, find out how much seeds will cost, count the seeds, measure the rows, watch the plants grow and chart their growth, pick vegetables and count them. 4. Building blocks can be a great math and science toy because they help children learn about engineering and geometry.

4. Families and Social Studies… 1. Children with language impairment and their parents should share a common language so that they can communicate a wide variety of family values, experiences, care and concern. 2. Social studies covers ancient history, including Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as American history. 3. Kids can memorize facts from textbooks, or they can do it the fun way – by visiting one of the many living history museums scattered across the country. VIDEO: Grade 1 -Social studies - Family tree craft

5. Families and Health, Safety, Nutrition and Movement… 1.Proper nutrition, safety in and out of the home, and healthy practices such as exercise and wearing sunscreen will decrease your child's chances of health problems in the present and future. 2.Kids cooking programs are a fantastic way to get kids interested and even excited about healthy foods. Children also learn about food safety and meal planning skills they help them learn about nutrition and healthy choices in a very fun, interactive way. 3. When small children start eating solid foods, they should be soft and cut into very small pieces to avoid choking. VIDEO: Healthy Eating and Nutrition Fun Video for Kids!!

6.Families and Art… 1. Draw pictures together: Draw a picture of what you have seen, whether it was on your walk together, on your front steps, in the backyard, or from your window. Ask your child to draw a plant, an animal, or a favorite place, and then ask her to tell you about the drawing. 2.Turn a drawing into a story : write down what your child says about the picture he just drew. Ask him to make up a story about the picture, and save it with other artwork and stories he has developed. 3. Singing songs and rhymes. VIDEO: Creative Arts Therapy for Children and Families

7. Social and Emotional Foundation of Children’s Learning… 1.Encouraging your child to make choices. For example: Let your child choose between two different outfits to wear or pick out an afternoon snack from a selection of a few healthy options. 2. Identify and name feelings with your child so he/she can practice using words to identify emotions. Help your child recognize his/her own feelings feel like and to identify feelings in other people. For example: play “Guess that Feeling” make a face that shows the feeling. VIDEO : Learn Emotions!
