Introduction to Standards EDUC275 Lisa Harris

When Planning Activities Phase 1: Determine Relative Advantage Phase 2: Decide Objectives and Assessments Phase 3: Design Integration Strategies Phase 4: Prepare Instructional Environment Phase 5: Evaluate & Revising Integrations strategies

Rationale for Standards  teachers know what is to be taught  children know what is to be learned  parents and the public can determine how well the concepts are being learned  guide efforts to measure student achievement  promote educational equity for all state and nationwide (from SC Department of Education Parent Guides to Standards)

Wordy Rationale Here are seven key reasons parents should be in the know about the curriculum standards: 1. Standards set clear, high expectations for student achievement. Standards tell what students need to do in order to progress through school on grade level. 2. Standards guide efforts to measure student achievement. Results of tests (PACT) on grade-level curriculum standards show if students have learned and teachers have taught for mastery. 3. Standards promote educational equity for all. Instruction in every school in the state will be based on the same curriculum standards. 4. Standards help parents determine if children in South Carolina are being taught the same subject content as children across the nation. 5. Standards inform parents about the academic expectations for their child. Standards give parents more specific information for helping their child at home. 6. Standards enable parents to participate more actively in parent/teacher conferences. Parents are able to have conversations with teachers about student progress in specific areas and understand more completely the progress of their child. 7. Standards help parents see how the current grade level expectations are related to successive years’ expectations. Parents are able to see how their child’s knowledge is growing from one year to the next.

State Standards  K-12  Arranged by subject area  Helpful to be familiar with the standards in other grades and subject areas   How Inspiration Meets SC Standards How Inspiration Meets SC Standards

National Standards  NETS-T  NETS-S  NETS-A  National specialty standards (CEC, subject areas)

When Planning Activities Phase 1: Determine Relative Advantage Phase 2: Decide Objectives and Assessments Phase 3: Design Integration Strategies Phase 4: Prepare Instructional Environment Phase 5: Evaluate & Revising Integrations strategies

Teaching Computer Skills Methods of teaching computer skills in the context of subject area content:  Experts within groups  Group collaboration to teach everyone  Gradual introduction to the software over time and with multiple activities  Using older students as tutors/ helpers  Parent volunteers  Job Aids

M&M Spreadsheet Activity

Related Standards  SC Grade 4 Math Measurement: C.Represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.  1. Construct bar graphs for collected data sets with scale increments of one or greater.  2. Read and interpret information from tables, line graphs, and bar graphs.  NETS-S Technology research tools  Students use technology tools to process data and report results.

Spreadsheets  Definition: To organize and manipulate data.  Also referred to as worksheets.  Information is stored in rows and columns.  Advantages: compare, calculate, copy, graph, predict, problem solve, etc.  Issues: ???

The Basics…

Excel Activity: Part One  Look at your bag. Make predictions based on the data collection sheet (Pre-computer activity).  Open the Bag, sort and count the M&M’s (pre- computer activity).  Open Microsoft Excel and create a spreadsheet to graph the data (at computer activity).  Have graph approved by instructor. Move to Part Two.

Excel Activity: Part Two 1. Find a SC standard for which you can create a graph Briefly explain an activity that students would do related to graphing and your content area. 3. Create an example of the graph. 4. Put this information in a PowerPoint presentation that includes at least four slides: a title slide, standards slide, activity slide and graph slide (you can copy and paste your graph into PowerPoint). 5. Save it to the t-share in the Sprouse “Excel” folder as your_last_name excel. 6. If you don’t finish, complete this activity for homework and turn it in by classtime on Wednesday.

A type of learning  How many of you made the spreadsheet and graphed the data?  How many of you are experts at Excel?  Why were you able to do this?  Tutorials are a form of directed instruction that help in constructivist learning  See “Useful Links and Handouts” for more information on Excel in the classroom.
