Slum Areas In India Dharavi-one of world’s largest Bhalswa-houses ~24% of Delhi’s population and rampant child labour Nochikuppam, Chennai-extensive poverty whereby people struggle to even have 2 meals daily Rajendra Nagar Slum, Bangalore-houses fill up with water during monsoon season Indiramma Nagar, Hyderabad-gross overcrowding due to high population density

Background of the slums (literally…) Over 65 million people live in slums Major slums include: Dharavi slum in Mumbai and Bhalswa Slum in Delhi Most slums have high crime rate Low literacy rate High birth rate due to lack of family planning and contraceptives Slums also have high death rate, especially children and elderly

Population Size of Slums Dharavi ~300,000 to 1 million Bhalswa 151,427 Rajendra Nagar ~2 million Parivartan ~440000 Indiramma Nagar, Hyderabad ~620,000

Problems faced by slum dwellers Social problems : Susceptibility to fires, floods and landslides Violence and crime is common in some slums High rate of disease due to poor living conditions Economic problems : Lack of education Informal economy, with many employing themselves No access to potable drinking water, and waste management Lack of sanitation and access to medical facilities
