High and Low Rates of Population Growth (Revised) Geography 8 2013 Instructions: Answer the questions on the slides during this lesson.

Causes of a high population growth rate Low Death Rate: Better hygiene Better medical/health care High Birth Rate: Lack of family planning Early marriages Preference for sons Need for farm labour

A Developing Country’s Population Pyramid: What do you notice?

Consequences of a high population growth rate Higher demand for resources Higher demand for housing Higher demand for education Higher demand for jobs Environmental problems (more waste and pollution) What are some other consequence?

How to reduce population growth Solutions: Education on family planning. How does that reduce population growth rate? Incentives and rewards. What does that mean? What about China? (p.21 Textbook)

Causes of a low population growth 1.Low Death Rate: Higher standard of hygiene (clean water/environment) Better nutrition (balanced diet) Better medical/health care (hospitals, clinic, doctors) 2. Low Birth Rate: Later marriage (lowers fertility rate) Fewer marriages Preference for smaller families

Ageing Population Pyramid –What is the largest age group?

Consequences of a low population growth rate: Ageing population (more older people) Higher taxes (fewer taxpayers so everyone pays more to fund public facilities and social services) Smaller talent pool (less people with skills; may need immigrants)

Managing low population growth rate: Encourage marriage and child bearing. How? (textbook p. 25) Meet the needs of the elderly. How? (textbook p. 25) Extending working life (people retire at a later age because there aren’t enough young workers) Financial help from the government (retirement funds, pensions, housing allowances)

Review Questions 1.What are the causes of a high population growth rate? Early marriages, preference for sons, need for farm labour and lack of family planning help to give birth to more babies. As there are better medical care, hygiene, the death rate decreases as the environment is healthy and people with diseases can be cured easily. 2. Describe the population pyramid of a developing country? Many children below 15. Children are the largest age group, as you go up the pyramid, there are fewer people. 3. What are the consequences of a high population growth rate? Lack of resources, housing, education, jobs and many environmental problems.

Review Questions (2) 4. What are the causes of the low population growth rate? Low death rate and low birth rate. There is a higher standard of hygiene, better nutrition and medical care. More women tend to get later marriages or not have children at all. 5. What are the consequences of low population growth rate? Ageing population occurs when the population of the elderly people grows more than the young people’s population.
