Business Continuity (BC) vs. Disaster Recovery (DR): A view from Wikipedia –Business Continuity is a progression of disaster recovery, aimed at allowing an organization to continue functioning after (and ideally, during) a disaster, rather than simply being able to recover after a disaster.disaster recovery –Disaster recovery is the process of regaining access to the data, hardware and software necessary to resume critical business operations after a natural or human-induced disaster. Disaster Recovery is part of a larger process known as Business Continuity.naturalhuman-induceddisasterBusiness Continuity –NET: DR is a component of BC. In a progressive disaster, such as Katrina, it is not sufficient just to be able to recovery your business/operations, you must be able to continue your operations when you are dislodged from your main location. Lessons Learned –Well Defined Communications Plan In the immediate aftermath of a crisis, the need for information is critical. Make sure your campus knows what the plan is. Cannot depend on CNN and local news media to get your story out. –Identify and Document Key Processes Usually overlooked Common Misconception that Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity are IT issues. –Develop/Implement/Test/Communicate the DR Plan and BC Plan Co-location strategy vs. Hosting Co-location offers Xavier more flexibility –Disaster (Hurricane) Preparedness Plan Scenario I: Campus closed for 3 or less days Scenario II: Campus closed for 4 or more days –Goals: Main web site and in less than 24 hours Key applications in less than one week Xavier University Of Louisiana A Tradition of Excellence
