Do Now Which object is living? What MAKES it alive? List at least 3 reasons.

Objectives Identify the 4 unifying themes of Biology. Explain what characteristics an organism must have to be considered alive.

Unifying themes of Biology 1. All living things share common characteristics 2. All living things share common needs 3. Living Things meet their needs through interactions with the environment 4. The types and numbers of living things change over time

1) All Living Things Share Common Characteristics a) Made of 1 or more cells. Unicellular Small, hard to see directly exchange nutrients and waste with environment Multicellular Work together cells have specialized jobs and work together to keep organism alive

All Living Things Share Common Characteristics b) Organized All parts work together to take in nutrients and remove waste Body plan allows it to survive in its environment

All Living Things Share Common Characteristics c) Growth and Development *Cell division and cell differentiation*

All Living Things Share Common Characteristics d) Responds to stimuli

All Living Things Share Common Characteristics Limited Life Span

2) All Living things share common needs. a) We need energy!! Energy is the ability to do work. The sun is the ultimate source of energy!

Energy Can come from food and is converted into usable form, think calories Energy moves along food web, only 10% of energy transferred to each level

How do we get our energy? Autotroph (Producers) Heterotroph (Consumers) Herbivore Carnivore Omnivore Scavenger

2) All Living things share common needs. B) Materials 1.) Water (a) Cells contain mostly water (b) Reactions within the body occur need water 2.) Oxygen - for cellular respiration in animal and plant cells 3.) Carbon Dioxide -for photosynthesis in plant cells 4.) Nitrogen

2) All Living things share common needs. C) living space Protection Sources of nutrients Area to grow and develop

3) Living Things meet their needs through interactions with the environment A) Environment: everything that surrounds an organism. –Living factors (biotic factors) –Non-living factors (abiotic factors) Ex: sunlight, temperature, climate, rocks, etc.

3) Living Things meet their needs through interactions with the environment B) Interactions- 2 or more things affecting each other.

Think-Pair-Share Name at least 5 DIFFERENT interactions occurring in the following picture.

Do Now List 2 characteristics that all living things share. List 2 needs that all living things share. What is the scientific term for a living thing? Non-living?

4. The types and numbers of living things change over time Biodiversity- variety of living organisms –a. there are about 1.4 million different species –b. Species- group of interbreeding organisms –c. Fossils- are evidence of species existence; they have lived, died, and evolved over time.

Adaptations What is an adaptation? –characteristic of an organisms that allows it to better survive in its environment *Organisms within a species must adapt to changing environments or they will become extinct!!*

Can you spot the adaptation in each picture?

Imaginary Creature Project Read the handout for instructions Assignment will be due the next class. You must make an ORIGINAL CREATURE!!

Quiz You will have a “quest” on MONDAY 9/26 Review the study guide, your notes, the powerpoint on the website, and the jeopardy game to help you study. We will do a quick lab tomorrow and then play jeopardy to review.
