Presentation transcript:

anything that takes up space and has mass What is matter? anything that takes up space and has mass matter is made of atoms mass – the amount of matter in an object If the object has even one atom it has a very tiny mass. If it has a lot of atoms, it has a larger mass. http://education.jlab.org/qa/atom_idx.html

What is not matter? What is matter?

Matter can be measured with different systems Many countries had their own systems of measurement Eventually almost all countries began using the same system of measurement: the metric system

In science, however, we use the metric system! Only one country in the world doesn’t use the metric system as it’s national system of measurement: The United States of America We use the English System as our national system of measurement In science, however, we use the metric system!

The metric system was created in France It is also called Systeme International d’Unites or the International System of Units Units of the metric system are called SI Units

How is matter measured? length – the distance from one point to another English units: inches, feet, yards, miles SI base unit: meter (m) volume – the amount of space an object takes up English units: teaspoon, cup, pint, quart, gallon SI base unit: liter (L) *capital mass – the amount of matter in an object English units: ounces, pounds, tons SI base unit: gram (g)

Metric Conversion Stair Step Method If you move down, the number gets bigger (multiplied). Move the decimal to the right. kilo- (k) 1,000 hecto- (h) 100 deka- (da) 10 BASE lengthmeter (m) volumeLiter (L) mass gram (g) deci- (d) .1 or 1/10 If you move up, the number gets smaller (divided). Move the decimal to the left. centi- (c) .01 or 1/100 milli- (m) .001 or 1/1000 http://www.kingscience.info/images/THE%20METRIC%20STAIRCASE.pdf

mass vs. weight mass is the amount of matter in an object weight is a measure of the force of gravity acting on an object Do you weigh the same on the earth and the moon? http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/
