 The United States, Liberia and Burma are noted on the map. What do you think these countries have in common that is NOT true for the rest of the world?

Imperial Volume How many teaspoons in a tablespoon? 3 How many tablespoons in an ounce? 2 How many ounces to a cup? 8 How many cups to a pint? 2 How many pints to a quart? 2 How many quarts to a gallon? 4 How many ounces are in a gallon? 128

Imperial Distance Number of inches in a foot? 12 How many feet are there in a yard? 3 How many feet in a mile? 5280 How many yards in a mile? 1760 How about, how big is an acre in square miles? 1/640

Imperial Weight How many ounces in a pound? 16 How many pounds in a stone? 14 How many grains in an ounce? 437.5 Pounds in a ton? United Kingdom a ton = 2,240 pounds In the United States a ton = 2,000 pounds

 The Metric System

SI  SI=Le Systeme International d’Unites  Modern version of the metric system. Based on a decimal system (moving decimal to convert)

 In using SI, we still measure length, mass, and volume but using different units.  English version:  Length-inches, yards, etc  Mass-pounds, ounces, etc  Volume-gallon, quart, etc SI

Length (in SI)  Measure of distance  Basic unit of length=METER (m)

Mass (in SI)  Mass = amount of matter in an object  Basic unit = GRAM (g)

Volume (in SI)  Amount of space an object takes up  Basic unit = LITER (L or l)

Metric Staircase In the metric system we don't use the same unit to measure everything! We add prefixes to modify the size of the base unit!

Kilo- 1000x Base Hecto- 100x Base Deka- 10x Base BASE Deci- Base/10 Centi- Base/100 Milli- Base/1000

So when we are dealing with small masses, we don't have to say.001 grams. We can simply say 1 milligram You will see this unit on pill bottles!

These prefixes work for all the metric base units! So Kilo is 1000 no matter if it is grams, liters, or meters! To indicate that we are using a modified base unit we add the first letter of the prefix to the base unit.

Length (in SI)  Basic unit of length=METER (m)  1.5 cm= 15 mm kmhmdmm cmmm

Mass (in SI)  Mass = amount of matter in an object  Basic unit = GRAM (g) kghgdgg cgmg

Volume (in SI)  Amount of space an object takes up  Basic unit = LITER (L or l) kLhLdLL cLmL

Measurement lab! 20 min

How to convert in SI  If moving up (or to the left) of the chart…move decimal place to the left.  If moving down (or to the right) of the chart…move decimal place to the right.

Length (in SI)  Basic unit of length=METER (m)  Conversions are a simple as moving a decimal  1.5 cm= 15 mm kmhmdmm cmmm

Mass (in SI)  Mass = amount of matter in an object  Basic unit = GRAM (g) kghgdgg cgmg

Volume (in SI)  Amount of space an object takes up  Basic unit = LITER (L or l) kLhLdLL cLmL

Volume, Continued  Measuring volume:  Graduated cylinder (for liquids)  Ruler (for solids that are square or rectangular)  Water displacement (for solids that are odd-shaped)

Meniscus

http://resources.edb.gov.hk/~s1sci/R_S1Science /sp/en/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______
