1 Metric System Basics

2 Metric System The metric system uses three main base units that corresponds to a certain kind of measurement Length = meter Volume = liter Weight (Mass) = gram Prefixes plus base units make up the metric system Example: Centi + meter = Centimeter Kilo + liter = Kiloliter

3 Metric System The three prefixes that we will use the most are:
Kilo- Centi- Milli- Make Metric System Ladder for Journal Kilo- k Hecto- h Deca- da Base Units Meter-m Gram-g Liter-L Deci- d Centi- c Milli- m

4 Metric System These prefixes are based on powers of 10. What does this mean? From each prefix every “step” is either: 10 times larger or 10 times smaller For example Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters kilo hecto deca Base Units meter gram liter deci centi milli

5 Move within the Metric System
Step 1: Decide what direction (right or left) along the ladder you need to move to Ex. Millimeters to centimeters kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

6 Move within the Metric System
Step 2: Move the decimal point one place for each “step” desired Example: millimeters to centimeters Step 3: Record the new number 1 cm = ____________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

7 Move within the Metric System
Now let’s try our previous example from meters to kilometers: 19 meters = __________ km Step 1  Decide which __________ to move Step 2  Determine how many ___________ to move the decimal Step 3  ____________ the new number kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

8 Move within the Metric System
Now let’s start from centimeters and convert to kilometers 400,000 centimeters = _______________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

9 Move within the Metric System
Now let’s start from meters and convert to kilometers 4000 meters = ____________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli Now let’s start from centimeters and convert to meters 4000 centimeters = ____________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

10 Move within the Metric System
Now let’s start from meters and convert to centimeters 5 meters = _______________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli Now let’s start from kilometers and convert to meters .3 kilometers = _______________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

11 Move within the Metric System
Now let’s start from kilometers and convert to millimeters 4 kilometers = ______________ kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

12 Move within the Metric System
Summary Base units in the metric system are meter, liter, gram Metric system is based on powers of 10 For conversions within the metric system, each “step” is 1 decimal place to the right or left Using the diagram below, converting to the right, moves the decimal to the right and vice versa kilo hecto deca meter liter gram deci centi milli

13 Meters to English Measurement:
Metric System Kilo Hecto Deca Base Unit Meter Gram Liter Deci Centi milli Meters to English Measurement: 1 inch = 2.54 cm 28.35 grams = 1 oz. (1 pound = 16 oz.)
