1 SI Units and The Metric System
Intro to Scientific Math

2 Measurement Familiar units of measurements include inches, gallons, and °Fahrenheit. These are all ENGLISH Units and are NOT used in science!

3 SI Units In 1973, the International Standard was created for all scientific measurements All scientists agreed to record data in the same system of measurements The Metric System

4 SI Units Main 5 Length = Meter Mass = Gram Volume = Liter
Time = Second Temperature = Kelvin

5 The Metric System All based on the power of 10
Makes conversions simple

6 The Metric System The Base Meter Gram Liter

7 What are Metric Conversions
Sometimes we need to change from one measurement to another This is usually done because base unit is either too big or too small for that type of measurement

8 Metric Units Kilo – 1 kilo = 1000 bases (k)
Hecto – 1 hecto = 100 bases (h) Deka – 1 deca = 10 bases (D) Base – (g,m,L) Deci – 10 deci in (d) Centi – 100 centi in (c) Milli – 1000 milli in (m)

9 How Will I Remember? King Henry Doesn’t Buy Dark Chocolate Milk

10 Using A Ruler Rulers usually have two sides to measure length
In science - only use centimeters!!!!

11 How Do I Do a Metric Conversion?
Need to be able to do 2 things 1. Count to 6 2. Know your Left from your Right

12 The Stair-Step Method To convert to a smaller unit, move the decimal point to the right or multiply by 10 for each step. Kilo- Hecto- Deka- Base Deci- Centi- Milli- To convert to a larger unit, move the decimal point to the left or divide by 10 for each step Grams, meters, liters

13 Try Using the Stair-Step Method
Example #1 1000mg = ________g Step 1: Determine if you are going to go Left or Right Step 2: Determine how many steps there are from milligrams to grams. Step 3: Move the decimal point the direction and amount of places that were determined in steps 1 and 2

14 Now You Try Example #2 1 L = ________mL
