Monday, June 3 rd Class Discussion If you could start a business or do anything in the world that you wanted to do – what would it be? What are 3 problems that confront any start up business?

Here is the plan… Students will understand the changes that took place in China after the death of Mao. Students will look at the positive & negative results of those changes. Students will know the difference between democracy and capitalism.

1976 – MAO is DEAD!!

DENG is the MAN Deng Xiaoping succeeded Mao and became the most powerful man in China in the 1980’s. Primary goal was to modernize and improve China’s economy. Died in 1997 at 92

Activity Compare the USA to the 5 nations of East Asia in the following 5 economic indicators : GDP PPP, GDP per capita PPP, GDP real growth rate, Unemployment rates, Population Below the Poverty Line* Use CIA Fact book and Excel to graph.

Can you be… Deng wanted the economic freedom of capitalism without the political freedom that comes from democracy.

The Good… China has the 2 nd largest economy in the world as measured by GDP PPP. China has seen tremendous growth rates for the past two decades +. A middle class is emerging in modern China.

Ice Cream??? OR I Scream!!! A pound of pecans has jumped a lb to over $6.00 a lb as Chinese consumers have begun to demand this product (WSJ). Do you think that China is driving up the price of other commodities?

One order of capitalism – hold the democracy !! NOT an easy task to accomplish!

Example – Tiannamen Square

The Bad… Tiananmen Square showed that China’s government would not have their authority questioned by pro- democracy student protestors. Lesson learned – economic freedom is NOT political freedom!

Leftover Men

The Bad… China has a One Child Policy enacted to control population. It is more of a strong guideline rather than a hard and fast rule – some exceptions are made. Unintended consequences???

Bubble Trouble?

The Ugly… Environmental degradation – in rush to modernize is China irreparably harming the world? 7 / 10 Most polluted cities in the world are located in China (source Discovery News).

The Ugly… China’s economy as measured by GDP per Capita PPP is NOT very strong. Poverty levels for many Chinese are still very high. Haves / Have Nots

Did Deng accomplish his goals?

Here is the plan… Students will understand the changes that took place in China after the death of Mao. Students will look at the positive & negative results of those changes. Students will know the difference between democracy and capitalism.
