INTERNATIONAL AIRFARES Chapter 4 International Travel and Tourism

INTERNATIONAL AIRFARES Objectives  4.1 Define Stopover and Connection  4.2 Interpret International Airfares  4.3 Interpret International Rules for Airfares

IATA AIRFARES  The U.S. airlines are privately owned and determine their own domestic airfare  International carriers are owned and controlled by their governments  International airfares are negotiated by different governments and regulated by IATA  Airfare wars such as those in the U.S. rarely happen with international carriers

STOPOVERS & CONNECTIONS  CONNECTION: also called a transfer, happens at any point between point of origin and point of destination that does not interrupt the journey and lasts fewer than 6 hours

STOPOVERS & CONNECTIONS  STOPOVER: Occurs when a traveler voluntarily interrupts the journey for more than 6 hours at any point between the point of origin and the point of destination

NORMAL FARE  NORMAL FARE: Unrestricted and totally flexible airfare can be purchased at the last minute no minimum stay you can travel on any day of the year you can exchange or change the flight anytime Has unlimited stopovers Usually no discounts

EXCURSION AND APEX FARES  BOTH ARE ECONOMY AIRFARES  Excursion: has some restrictions such as minimum stay, travel at specific seasons, roundtrip only, purchase 7-14 days in advance of travel, some stopovers, valid for 4 months

EXCURSION AND APEX FARES  Apex Fare: advance-purchase excursion fare, must be purchased 21 days or more in advance, is the least expensive international airfare, has most restrictions, must stay on specific airline, no stopovers, roundtrip, good for 3-6 months

INFANTS’ & CHILDREN’S FARE  Usually calculated as a percent of the adult fare  Person under 2 is called an infant  Infant fare is 10% of adult fare as long as the infant does not use a seat  If there are 2 infants, one must occupy a seat and is charged 50% of an adult fare  If traveling in Area 3 of the world, 67% is charged for infants  When an infant flies alone, full fare is charged

INFANTS’ & CHILDREN’S FARE  Child: a person between 2 and 11 years old  Charged 50% of adult fare  On all journeys except in Area 1, a child between 2 and 7 must be accompanied by an adult  Airfare in Area 1 for child with adult is 67% of adult fare  A person 12 or older is charged an adult fare

AIRFARE INFORMATION  Can be obtained from CRS-computer reservations systems or from manual displays  Air Tariff Book: manual display, contains all airfare information to everywhere  Air Tariff books are published several times a year because rates change  Point of origin is the city the journey originates from-you must know this first to determine the fare

AIRFARE DISPLAYS  Normal fares such as first class, business class and economy/coach are listed at the beginning of the fare display  Roundtrip fares are listed in bold and one-way trips appear normal  Discount fares are listed toward the bottom of the display  The least expensive and most restricted airfares are the APEX fare, listed near the bottom of the display

SUMMARY  A connection is an involuntary interruption of a journey for less than 6 hours/no charge  A stopover is a voluntary interruption of a journey for more than 6 hours/has a charge.  A normal fare is unrestricted and allows unlimited stopovers  Apex and Excursion fares are discounted economy fares, no stopovers 
