3 Aims of the New NC

Aims of the New NC The aim is for children to do calculations in their heads and, if the numbers are too large, to use a way of writing them down that helps their thinking. Can I solve it in my head? Can I solve it using jottings? Can I solve it using written methods?

Know by heart facts by end of KS1  Find 1 more or one less than any 2 digit number  Count in 2’s, 5’s 10’s  Number bonds to 10 and 20  2, 5, 10 x tables and corresponding division facts  Doubles and halves to 20  Addition facts to 20 and corresponding subtraction facts  Add and take away multiples of 10 from any 2 digit number These are the building blocks for KS2.

Number bonds to 10 and 20  56 + ___ = 60  54 + ___ = 100  100 – 78 =

2, 5, 10 x tables and corresponding division facts  29 x 1000 =  22 x 55 = ( 20 x 50 = and 2 x 5 = )  68 ÷ 2 =

Doubles and Halves to 20  Double 254  Halve 96  Find ¼ of 40

Building on what you already know

Building on what they already know  If I know double 6, I know =  If I can find 1 more or 1 less than a number, I can find 10 more or 10 less than a number  If I know 3 x 5, I know 30 x 50

How can you support at home?  Making Maths purposeful  At the shop – find change, round, estimate costs  Time – If I put the casserole in at 11:15 and it takes 45 minutes to cook, what time will it be finished at?  I have 150 ml of milk but need 200 ml. How many more ml do I need for the recipe?  During a week, look outside for ‘thirties’ numbers, such as 34 or 38,  on house doors, number plates, bus stops, etc. How many can you  spot? What is the biggest one you can find?  Games like snap or bingo  Board games that involve dice and spinners – helps not only with counting but with the concepts of chance.  Sing songs - 
