Welcome to Year 3/4 Mathematics Update Monday 23 rd November 2015

The New Curriculum  The curriculum changed in September 2014  Lots of things moved into a new year group (what was taught in year 4 is now taught in year 3 e.t.c.)  More focus on mental and written calculation and recall of facts (times tables and number bond)  New focus on ‘mastery’ which means being able to apply knowledge in problem solving.

Times tables in Year 3  By the end of Year 3 all children should know:  2x, 5x, and 10x (taught in year 2)  3x, 4x and 8x (8x is new to year 3)  They should also know the division facts for these times tables.  They should also be able to count in steps of: 50 and 100.

Times tables in year 4  By the end of Year 4 all children should know:  All their multiplication facts up to 12x12  (2x, 5x and 10x from year 2, 3x, 4x,and 8x from year 3, 6x, 7x, 9x, 11x and 12x in year 4)  They should also know all corresponding division facts for all the times tables.  They should also be able to count in steps of: 25 and 1000

Number Bonds  By the end of year 3:  Be confident with bonds (addition and subtraction) to 10, 20 and 100. (Taught in year 2).  E.G:  7+3=10  17+3=20  70+30=100

Mental Calculation in Year 3  Finding 10 and 100 more/less (100 square to support)  Add and subtract 9 or 19 to a number (blank number lines)  63+19= 82  Doubling numbers (partitioning)  24+24  20+20=40  4+4=8  40+8=48 +20 6383 82

Mental Calculation Year 4  Find 1000 more/less than a given number (use previous knowledge)  Securing strategies from year 3, choosing the best strategy to use.

Written Methods in Year 3  Begin to use the column method for addition and subtraction  (3 digit number by 1 digit, 2 digit then 3 digit numbers)  Begin to use grid method for multiplication  (2 digit by 1 digit)  Introduction to bus stop method (may use chunking)  (2 digit by 1 digit)

Column addition and subtraction

Multiplication and Division

Written methods in Year 4  Formal written methods:  Column methods for addition and subtraction.  (numbers up to 4 digits)  Introduction to long multiplication methods  (2 digit by 1 digit, 3 digit by 1 digit)  Introduction to the bus stop method (including remainders)  (3 digit by 1 digit)

Addition and Subtraction

Multiplication and Division

Equipment we use in school  Counters,  Number cards,  Bead strings,  Number lines,  100 squares,  Multiplication girds,

Problem Solving Do you really understand?  Going for mastery level means understanding what you are learning.  12x3=36 (or 27x4= 108)  Mrs Walker bought 12 (27) bunches of bananas, there were 3 (4) bananas on each bunch. How many bananas were there altogether?  Can you write your own times table problem?  The answer is 842. Write 4 different addition calculations where this is the answer.  SATS (not as far away as you might think) now has 1 calculation paper and one problem solving paper.

Explaining, Reasoning and Talking about Maths  We will often ask how did you do that calculation (we often get my brain did it!)  If children can explain and model a method it is another way of showing they fully understand.  Peer support (let me tell you, show you, help you).  Try this at home

Maths at Home  Out and about: talk about things you see (shapes, colours, numbers, groups of items, shopping lists, prices, special offers, timetables for buses and trains)  At home: play number games (snakes and ladders, counting toys by grouping, dividing/sharing toys, cooking (measuring), how long can you?, you have __to play on the computer! You can go on the computer at 11’o’clock).  On the Computer:  Purple Mash (table toons and other activities)  Ictgames.com  Topmarks.co.uk  Mathsplaygorund.com  www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths
