The BIG Three Daily to do list Weekly time management schedule Monthly calendar

Daily to-do list Your short term memory is limited…., (about 7-12 items). Use your college planner or buy a planner to keep track of every day tasks. Keep the planner with you always!

Weekly Time Management Schedule Designate the hours you are in class. Draw lines through the hours you cannot study. Designate the hours that you will study (approximately 2 hours outside of class for every one hour in class). Choose hours for leisure and physical activity.

Monthly Calendar Write down long term assignments, quiz and test dates, essay due dates. Hang the calendar in a highly visible area. Check often and update.

Study Between Classes. “I spent a lot of time watching TV during the day until I figured out that if I studied, I could have my nights free. Don’t go back to your house between classes. Find someplace to study.” John Carroll University

Stay Out of Bed “Anytime I didn’t have classes, I slept. It’s a bad habit to get into.” Rollins College

Prioritize Taking 15 credit hours IS A FULL TIME JOB. Figure 30 hours for study and class preparation (2 hours outside of class for every one hour in class) plus the 15 hours a week you sit in class and you have a grand total of 45 hours a week. If you are working more than 15 hours a week, you will have to make a sacrifice on the academic side. Decide what you need to prioritize.

Make a Calendar for the Entire Semester “I combine all the dates from all the course syllabi onto one calendar and hang it where I can see it daily. It’s a visual thing. You have to see it. U of Wisconsin

Set Specific Study Hours “For me, the toughest past of studying is getting started. I set aside a specific time for every day. It’s like going to a job; you have to be there.” Cornell University

Make Lists “In high school you can do it when it comes to mind or when someone reminds you. In college there’s too much to remember and nobody’s going to remind you!” Adelphi University. *Your short term memory can only hold about 7 items.
