Greek Vocabulary

Expectations of Weekly Homework Due every Wednesday The root and the meaning 2 word derivatives that contain root, prefix or suffix

These words are derivatives; the root is in each of these words You need to find 2 derivatives for each root, prefix and suffix. Make sure the derivative’s definition has the root’s meaning OR that the [ ] at the end of the definition says the meaning and Greek origin Dictionary entries ending in – are not a derivative Anthrop = man; mankind  Anthropology  Philanthropy  Misanthrope Phil = love  Philanthropy  Philosophy  Philadelphia Incorrect! Wednesday’s Homework

Collegiate Dictionary Make sure the dictionary definition has the same meaning as the root, prefix or suffix or that the word origin, found in [ ] at the end of the deviation, says that the word is Greek and has the proper meaning. EXAMPLE of a dictionary entry: anthropo-  Origin: < Gk, comb. form of ánthrōpos human being, man

CAUTION!!!!!! Be careful not to list the same derivatives with 2 different suffixes.  For example:  Anthropology  Anthropologist  Anthropological These are the same derivative with different suffixes. You will miss points because you only provided one derivative.

Friday Quizzes Quizzes will be given on Fridays (a week without a Friday will not have vocabulary) You are required to remember all the roots, prefixes, and suffixes that you have studied for the entire year because some pervious roots, prefixes and suffixes will appear on your quizzes.

Helpful Hints Make flashcards Quizzes will be derivatives. You will have to make an educated guess of the meaning of the words based on your knowledge of the meaning of the roots, prefixes, and suffixes

Example of Quiz! Anthropophobic anthrop –man phob – fear of Fear of man Philanthropy phil - love anthrop - man Love of man Write the derivative on your paper. Select the root, prefixes or suffixes covered in class and write them on the next line (s). (1 Point each) Write the definition (s) of those roots and suffixes and prefixes. (1 Point each) Write your educated guess of the words meaning. (1 Point)

Remembering to Study 1. You will be responsible to remember every root, prefix and suffix from throughout the year. TRUST ME. Roots, prefixes and suffixes will show up over and over again.

Remembering to Study 2. Make flash cards – put the root on the front and the meaning on the back. Study these flashcards before every test. When you study you can make two piles – one you know and don’t have to study as hard and another pile you need to focus on.
