SPELLING

Learning spelling patterns & rules can be a chore With the right resources it can be seen as fun Spelling booklets are arranged in Year by Year; and term by term order; and use the Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check method. Booklets are based on the spellings from the New Primary Curriculum for English (2014)

Spellzoo has electronic school spelling and vocabulary resources Weekly spelling lists for each term at every level from Year 1 through to Year 6 Each spelling booklet has an associated Word Puzzle booklet. These contain four different activities for each class, with dictionary definitions to help increase vocabulary.

How do children practise? Practice your weekly spelling lists ANYWHERE! Write the word in the box. Look at it carefully and say it to yourself. Cover the word up and try and picture it in your mind. In the next box write the word and then check the spelling. If it’s wrong, then have another go but if it’s correct then move on to the next word.

1.I listen to the sounds of the words in my head. I write a list of possible spellings and choose the one I think looks right. 2.I try to think of a spelling rule. 3.I break the words into bits and say their sound. 4.I see the word inside my head. 5.I link to other words that are related to it. 6.I say the word aloud. 7.I find it just comes. 8.I look up the word in a dictionary. How do you try to spell?

Crossword - allows the student to practice spelling by correctly identifying a word from a clue and writing it into the grid.

Which level is my child on? To ensure children at the right level we have calculated their spelling age using Vernon Spelling Age system The test of 80 words is stopped for a child once they have made 10 errors. We check their spelling age against their chronological age Spellings are allocated according to spelling age Each set of spelling is called an animal to remove stigma of one child being a different level than another.
