Science Olympiad Head Coach: Rhonda Pawlik Assistant coaches: Dr. Howell Karen Cerjan, Stephanie Kelly Fred Kelly Parents

Science Olympiad is a track and field type of academic sport that revolves around science knowledge dealing with Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Earth Science, and Engineering There will be one regional science meet held at Lenoir-Rhyne University usually in March on a Saturday.

Science Olympiad Team Plan to have 2 elementary teams consisting of 18 students on each team. Restrictions on the number of 6 th graders. We can have 10 sixth graders if we have 2 teams. Our other option is competing in the Middle School Competition. All interested students will need to pick their top 6 events they would like to compete in.

Helpful Hints Science Olympiad coaches manual- Scroll to each event description and help your child make choices of what he/she would like to study. Science Olympiad coaches manual I will send ClassScapes codes for students to take practice tests. Please make sure they look at what is correct and incorrect. You can make flashcards with the questions and answers.

More Helpful Hints Students need a notebook to take notes and store notes. Make flashcards for students to study. Help, Help, Help!- This is one time we give parents permission to get involved as much as possible. Study, Study, Study! Practice, Practice, Practice!

Events this year All Charged Up (2.P.2, 3.P.2, 3.P.3, 4.P.2, 4.P.3, 5.P.3, 6.P.3) Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of magnets, magnetism & electricity. Team members may be required to know the parts of a circuit, identify positive and negative charges and understand how a light bulb works.

Events continued Describe It, Build It (Science as Inquiry) Teams will be judged on their ability to effectively communicate by having one team member write a description of how to build a device and having his or her partner re-construct the device from raw materials.

More events Backyard Biologist (2.L.1, 3.L.2, 6.L.1) Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of living organisms that they may encounter in their own backyard. In 2015, the focus will be on trees, plants, and birds. Chew the Fat – Digestive System (3.L.1, 4.L.2, 5.L.1) Teams will demonstrate knowledge of the human digestive system and nutrition using diagrams and models. Team members may be required to identify the parts and their basic functions in this system.

Decisions for team members Students need to be committed to studying once a week at school and/or study at home. Teacher input Parent involvement Interest in at least two topics not including the building events. Can be available for the competition on a Saturday.

Practices Science Olympiad will meet on Mondays from 2:30-4:00. Practice will not be held on September 22 nd. We will increase our meeting days closer to the event. Once everything gets started then a schedule will be sent out on specific areas I will concentrate on each week.

Information I will post information on my website. You can get to it through Startown’s website and clicking on Literacy Specialist. You can download Remind app & enter the class or text (828) with this
