1 What is CPM? CPM stands for College Preparatory Mathematics
CPM also stands for CPM’s 3 pillars: Cooperative Learning Problem-Based Learning, and Mixed, Space Practice Homework problems are review of what they have learned and a preview of what is to come.

2 CPM Philosophy Statements
1. Students must be actively involved in their learning. 2. Teachers are responsible for actively guiding, supporting, and summarizing; while students are working in groups. 3. Mastery takes time, effort, and support. 4. Assessments are a combination of new and review skills.

3 Ways Parents Can Support Their Child
Download the Parent Guide: to stay connected to what your child is learning. The Parent Guide provides an alternative explanation of key ideas along with additional practice problems. Lessons are organized by: Course and Chapter, or Strand and Topic (to see how topics are related from one course/grade to another) The Parent Guide also offers problems parents can assign as extra practice. If your child asks for help, ask guiding questions that will lead them to figure out how to do the problem. (see sample questions on next slide).

4 Sample Questions to Ask Your Child
What does this word/phrase tell you? What do you know about this part of the problem? Is there a simpler or similar problem we can do first? What do you think comes next? Have you tried drawing a diagram, making a list, looking for a pattern, etc? What have you tried? What steps did you take? What important examples or ideas were highlighted by your teacher?

5 Ways Parents Can Support Their Child (continued)
Find Homework Help using your child’s eBook account. *Log-in information provided by teacher’s introductory letter. Contact teacher for further assistance. Homework Help offers hints to help guide students to the correct answer. The website is designed to assist students to be able to do the problems, but not necessarily to do the problems for them. Discuss with your child the importance of mathematics for their future. Instill in your child the idea that they can learn mathematics. Encourage your child to study, take notes, and participate in class. Ask questions about what your child is doing in class.

6 Honors Middle School Math Courses
Recommendations for students to be placed, and/or to continue to the next advanced math course in the sequence is based on the following: Maintaining A/B Average for marking period grades Maintaining a C average or better on District Midterm and Final (IM1 and IM2) Consistently demonstrating grade level proficiency on standardized assessments such as I-Ready or Smarter Balance.  If a student is not able to demonstrate the above criteria, he/she may be recommended to follow an alternative trajectory to ensure gaps are not widened by the accelerated pacing.

7 Math League Math League is an extra curricular, after school activity where students compete as a team to independently solve real-world, complex problems. Each school has a 7th and 8th grade team. 6th graders are permitted try out for the 7th grade team. Schools are looking for the top __ students for each grade level team. Practices will be held___________. Tryouts will be held ____________. Students compete in monthly after school competitions against other schools and districts beginning in November.
