1 2 nd Grade UIL Sign-up It’s time again to sign up for UIL teams. UIL is a great opportunity for your child to compete academically against other students from within the district. The UIL meet will be held on Saturday, April 23 rd. You will find a short description of each event for your child’s grade level. Participating in an UIL event is optional. If chosen to be a part of the team, your child will need to attend all practices. Practice days and times will be after school and determined by the event coach. Transportation will not be provided. It will be your responsibility to pick up your child at the end of each practice unless he or she walks home. Please encourage your child to participate in an event. Storytelling Event Description: To tell a story, participants must develop skills in listening, thinking and speaking. Students are read a story, which they must orally tell back to the judges. Preparing for this event also allows for the development of creative expression and self-confidence. The story is read only once to students, and then they retell that story in their own words before judges. Creative Writing Event Description: Creative writing is designed to promote creativity and to encourage writing skills. Students will be able to evaluate their own writing and the writing of others. Students are given a prompt with several captioned pictures. From the pictures, the students will create an original story based on their selections in 30 minutes. It is not a contest of memorization. Preparation for this contest should include instruction in the rules of the English language, meanings and definitions, and root words. Students will also learn to write clearly and to capitalize words properly. Students will write down words given on their paper at a rate of approximately five words per minute. Music Memory Event Description: The focus of this contest is an in-depth study of music taken from a wide variety of music genres to expose students to great composers, their lives, and their music. Number Sense Event Description: Students are asked to use their ability to make quick mental calculations to make decisions. Concepts covered include but are not limited to: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions, and use of mathematical notation. Students will be given a 10 minute fill-in-the-blank test which they must complete without doing calculations on paper or on a calculator. Art Event Description: The art contest involves the study of 40 paintings from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and from Texas art galleries and museums. Students learn to recognize and identify various works of art and the artists who created them. Dictionary Skills Event Description: Thorough knowledge of the dictionary is a way to increase a student’s ability to find the information that is needed for class work as well as everyday living. Listening Event Description: The listening contest is designed to help students recognize the importance of effective listening skills and to identify problems they may have in listening effectively.
