Hurricane Earl – Category 3 Storm

RAINFALL FORECAST FROM HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER

HURRICANE EARL PROJECTION Major category 3 hurricane currently Hurricane or Tropical Storm Watch may be issued later today or tonight for at least some of coast NHC track and those of most computer models have Earl passing within 100 miles southeast of Nantucket as category 2 or possibly 3 hurricane Interaction with northern U.S. weather system being watched closely

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND IMPACTS Marine High seas, high surf, and dangerous rip currents likely Thursday through Saturday – Already have swells capable of producing rip currents…especially Cape Ann and Islands – Dangerous rip currents likely along most ocean exposed beaches whether south or east facing Thursday through Saturday – Seas over open coastal waters 10 to 20 feet to left of track 20 to 30+ feet very near track 30 to 40+ feet to right of the track

HURRICANE EARL IMPACTS Wind Tropical Storm force winds now more likely than not for Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard – Hurricane force possible – especially Nantucket and outer Cape Tropical Storm Force gusts possible rest of SE Massachusetts and Rhode Island along and SE of a Boston-Providence line

HURRICANE EARL IMPACTS Heavy Rain/Flooding Could be biggest issue for Rhode Island and portions of eastern Massachusetts Increasing probability of 2 to 4 inches of rain throughout Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts Axis of 4 to 7 inches of rain possible Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts Streams and rivers with significant urban runoff likely to be biggest problems

HURRICANE EARL IMPACTS Storm Surge Flooding Storm surge of a few feet due to northeast winds could cause minor flooding along Nantucket Harbor and northeast shore of Martha’s Vineyard, if coinciding with Friday evening high tide If Hurricane Earl passes closer to outer Cape, then some concern for storm surge flooding behind the storm for Wellfleet and Provincetown harbors
