Assessment FOR Learning A key component of improved Math scores in Durham, North Carolina Dr. Eric J. Becoats Superintendent Dr. Lewis Ferebee Chief of Staff

Assessment for Learning (AFL) -Piloted AFL model in math ( ) -Employed model in 14 of 53 schools -Achieved average gain in math proficiency of 7.3% -Realized positive gains in 13 of 14 (93%) schools participating in pilot -Provided intensive training for teachers on unpacking standards 2

Goal of Assessment for Learning – To move from formal assessments that merely check the status of learning to more frequent, informal assessments that are designed to improve learning – Instead of informing others about students, the AFL serves to inform students about themselves 3
