Project Overview How to get here…

Half Way to the Test Run October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview2 …starting from here? John Jaros HPS Collaboration Meeting Jefferson Lab October 18, 2011 (An Overview of a Transcontinental Project)

Sobering Thought: We’re ½ way there HPS is making a mad dash toward preparing the HPS Test Run in time for the Spring 2012 CEBAF run. We got word of funding in June ‘11, need to be ready in March ‘12. Time-wise, we are about halfway there. Work-wise, we are making good progress on all fronts, but have lots to do, and are still discovering more to do. This meeting will teach us how far we have come, how far we still must go, what’s going well, and what needs help. October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview3 supposed to be 

Outline Official Business Goals for this meeting Issues from last time… for discussion and resolution here. HPS at the Intensity Frontier Workshop Looking forward October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview4

Official Business Since we met May 25-27, 2011, HPS followed some DOE requests: * Established project management team (Stepan and John) * Developed more detailed schedules and milestones * Requested and got funding for JLAB and SLAC. FY11 funds were received in July; FY12 funds due soon. Established a Collaboration Rules Committee (Carlos, Sarah, Matt, Omar) who are guiding the formation of the HPS Collaboration, will report at this meeting, and get things started. Established our first Engineering Reviews, which will be conducted during this meeting for beamline, Ecal, and SVT. October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview5

Schedules and Milestones Schedules were updated and detailed, some in great detail, some in less. * SVT, SVT DAQ, Software, Beamline, Ecal, and Ecal DAQ * All were useful for our planning and satisfying DOE It is time to update our high level schedules and milestones. * We know more than we did in June, some items have slipped, some plans have sharpened, so the schedule can be more realistic. * High level items and major milestones only * Goal is to have HPS ready March 1, We’ll hear about updated schedules in the course of this meeting. October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview6

Engineering Reviews This meeting includes reviews for SVT, Ecal, and Beamline engineering designs. Point of the reviews is to have Jlab engineers understand and okay the detector designs as they impact CEBAF and Hall B operations. So, e.g., the exact layout of the beamline, vacuum chambers, vacuum flanges, and materials within the beam vacuum need Jlab’s OK. Also, e.g., what services will be needed for the detectors, how many electronics racks are needed, how detectors will be installed and surveyed, needs discussion. Other details of the detector designs (how the ecal cooling system works, how the SVT modules are constructed, etc.) remains the responsibility of the sub-detector groups. October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview7

Meeting Summaries on Confluence HPS has partially adopted using Confluence to record presentations and information discussed at meetings, and decisions taken at meetings. As it becomes more important to have a written record of decisions taken, all subgroups are encouraged to keep their records on the confluence pages. Please look over the confluence pages. There’s a wealth of information there. October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview8

Goals for this meeting Review status of major detector subsystems, DAQ, simulation framework, and software. Prioritize and define the software effort needed to prepare for running the experiment and taking data. Look for help! * What must be monitored and controlled? * What displays do we need to check detector performance? * Special displays for beam tuning, setup, and background studies Begin discussions on key software issues * Data Definition, EVIO, and LCIO (Sergey and Homer) * Slow controls software requirements (Hovannes) * Establishing the conditions data base (Homer) October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview9

Issues from last time…to deal with HPS will run parasitically with Hdice * What is the setup? * What are the event rates? What is the physics? * Can we remove PAC contingencies with this run? FADC status was unclear * Will FADCs be ready in time? FADC trigger? * What will we use for a trigger? * Can the “one-bit” trigger work for HPS? How to integrate JLAB/SLAC DAQ * Step I: Can we settle on the Trigger Interrupt design? * Can we plan the steps toward DAQ integration? lcsim is the Simulation/Analysis Framework for HPS * Full detector simulation available? Physics? Backgrounds? * Include Ecal digitization, full time development of signals? * Include accurate detector geometries? October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview10

October 18, Goals of Workshop What are physics opportunities at the Intensity Frontier? What can be learned from new experiments? What experiments can be done with current facilities? What experiments need new facilities or technology? Sponsored by DOE Offices of HEP & NP Science case only, no prioritization Input for future program decisions DOE wants to see community involvement Opportunity to demonstrate our interest in this physics HPS Project Overview

October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview12 Please Register:

HPS Role at Intensity Workshop With others, make a compelling physics case Report our activities on the HPS Test Run and plans for full HPS Explore new ideas How can we expand HPS reach? If we think bigger, can we cover significantly more open territory? Are there other hidden sector particles HPS can search for? H’,W’, Z’… Giving DOE a compelling science case and presenting a committed community can’t hurt our chances for funding full HPS October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview13 There is room for improvement Mont’s Gap

Next Stop: March 2012 October 18, 2012HPS Project Overview14 We want to be ready to install HPS by March 2012 We must be smart about where we put our effort * Most important are items that allow us to remove the PAC’s contingencies on full HPS by evaluating occupancies and trigger rates * Next are tests of triggering, tracking, and high rate DAQ, that demonstrate HPS performance capability. * After that is data taking at rates that will do the physics We must evaluate occupancies and trigger rates next Spring We’d love to do much, much more.
