Tenth Avenue North The Light Meets the Dark By Summer Smothers

Background Information Tenth Avenue North is a Christian pop-rock band from West Palm Beach, Florida. They took their name from a major east-west road in Palm Beach County. Mike Donehey, the lead singer and songwriter, stated, “We wanted it to be a collision between our hearts and God's truth. His grace collides with the dark inside of us.” The Light Meets the Dark, their second studio album, was released on May 11, 2010.

Background Information Cont. The executive producer of the record was Terry Hemmings along with Jason Ingram. The album was released by Reunion Records, and the cover art belongs to them.

Audience The main audience of this picture is directed mainly towards teenagers, but can be viewed by anyone and everyone. You could see it in a music store and more than likely in a Christian book store.

1.What is the first thing your eye is drawn to? 2.Why do you think there is a steak of light in the middle of the picture? 3.How does this cover art relate to the title of the album, The Light Meets the Dark?

Juxtaposition There is obviously some juxtaposition in this picture. At the bottom, there is mainly dark blues and blacks, but once the darkness meets the streak of light in the center, everything becomes white. This was done to show once our darkness collides with light, everything becomes easier and brighter.

Color Symbolism 1.What do you think the dark colors at the bottom of the picture and the white at the top of the picture symbolize? 2.Why do you think the three guys in the middle of the picture are still in dark colors?

Focus The focus of this picture is the light next to the man on the far right. The light is brighter in this spot than it is anywhere else in the image. If you close your eyes and open them again, more than likely, your eyes will be drawn to that particular spot of light.

Logos, Pathos, and Ethos I believe that this image is logos, a logical appeal. Whenever someone looks at it, it doesn’t take much logic to figure out what the image is trying to communicate. I also believe that this image is pathos, an emotional appeal. To some people, it could mean hope and joy and to others it might be offensive. Either way, it sparks an emotion. It can be argued whether or not this image holds ethos, because everyone has different opinions of what they think is right and wrong. Because it is a Christian band, it is safe to assume that this album cover is applying to the specific morals and ethics of Christians.
