Marriage XV By: John Stezaker http://www.moma.org/collection/object.php?object_id=107988 Megan Jones

Background Information Artist: John Stezaker ◦ Born:1949 (England) ◦ Attended The Slade School of Art in London ◦ Currently lives and works out of London Year: 2006 Created from gelatin silver prints ◦ A.k.a. Black & White Photographs ◦ (9 13/16 x 8 1/2“) Currently located in The Museum of Modern Arts

I think the audience is people who are married and/or thinking about getting married. Audience: Who do you think the audience is?

I think that the artist is trying to tell us that once you are married you and your spouse become as one person. Each person no longer has an individual identity. Many “newly weds” don’t understand this and need too. Logos: What do you think the artist is trying to portray in this artwork? Why?

I believe that the artist is credible since the artist is widely known in London and this art work is located in a famous art museum. Ethos: Do you believe that that artist is credible? Why?

I get a sense of happiness from this artwork because of the smiles on both faces. I also get a sense of seriousness when I look at the eyes. What emotion(s) do you get from the artwork? Pathos:

I think that the focal point is the man and woman’s eyes because they are dark and in the center of the artwork. Everything kind of expands out from it. Focus: What is the main focal point?

I think the artist used black and white photos because it shows that the bondage of marriage is a tradition and not something new. Technique: Why do you think that the artist used gelatin (black & white) photos?

I think the artist used middle aged people because that is what most people consider the “Status Quo” age of a married couple and a younger couple would take away from the “tradition” of the idea and an older couple would take away the “modernism” of the idea. Technique II: Why do you think that the artist used people of middle age? Why not someone younger? Or older?

I think the artist placed the photos in the order he did because it shows that the man should be head of the relationship and the woman should always be there to back him up. Composition: Why do you think that the artist placed the photos in the order he did?

I think the artist used photos with two different tones of lighting to distinguish the idea that the man should be the dark, “backbone” of the relationship and that the woman should be the “light” of the relationship. Composition II: Why do you think that the artist used photos of different tones of lighting?
