Birmingham 1963 By: Heather Johns

What do you see? Two men shielding a woman, while shielding themselves. A pressure hose pounding on them.

Background In Birmingham, AL there was a large black population and a dominant white population, which was very hostile.

Who is this picture for? This picture’s audience is the people who are racist towards African Americans. To show them the cruelties that the African Americans faced

What is the focus of this picture? The focus of the picture lies upon the men and woman getting battered with the pressure hose.

What is this picture missing? This picture is missing the person holding the hose.

Why do you think that is? The person holding the pressure hose is omitted because, if they were in the picture, you would lose focus of the main idea.

What do the elements in the picture symbolize? The pressure hose in the picture symbolizes the mean words and actions of the whites during this time period.

Now, what do you see? I think now that the picture is cropped, you see the pain and suffering of the African Americans clearer.

Appeal Ethos: it has ethical appeal because it shows you your morals just by looking at the picture. Pathos: it shows emotional appeal because it makes you angry that people are being so inhumane. Logos: it applies to the way we think about what we do and how we act.
