 Students in the Hazelwood School District published two articles in the school newspaper that the Principal did not agree with -Articles were on divorce and teen pregnancy  The Principal deleted the articles without the students originally knowing  Students sued the school district for violation of freedom of press and speech Issue

 First Amendment in question  Due Process Clause, the Fourteenth Amendment Amendments Under Discussion

 The students’ rights had not been violated  An article written in a school news paper is part of curriculum not “public forum”  Opinion written by Byron R. White  No concurring opinions  Hazelwood School District won the case   "A school must also retain the authority to refuse to sponsor student speech that might reasonably be perceived to advocate drug or alcohol use, irresponsible sex, or 'conduct otherwise inconsistent with the shared values of a civilized social order,' or to associate the school with any position other than neutrality on matters of political controversy."
