Writing a Stellar Personal Statement

Disclaimer Your response should be personal. –This means it only works for you. You may have to rework your statement multiple times I cannot write this for you

Brainstorming Consider your Childhood Consider your Role Models Read Sample Admissions Essays Goal Determination

Choosing a Topic Can you provide vivid personal experiences? Will your topic only repeat information that is found elsewhere? Can you keep the reader interested? Will your topic turn off a large number of people? Will an admissions officer remember your essay after reading through hundreds of other essays?

Focus on Personal Qualities How have you overcome adversity? What personal characteristics make you a good candidate for higher education/scholarship? Don’t mention weaknesses (unless absolutely necessary). Be HONEST

Tips for Writing a Stellar Essay 1.Be original 2.Be yourself 3.Don’t use big words unless you can use them correctly 4.Use clear vivid examples 5.Hook the reader with your introduction 6.The body of your essay should relate to the introduction 7.Use transitions 8.The conclusion is your last chance to impress the reader 9.Give your draft to others 10.Revise, Revise, Revise

You are not done yet! Your personal statement will be proofed and revised multiple times. Ask teachers and classmates to read your personal statement and provide constructive feedback. Only when your peer reviewer and I OK your personal statement will you be ready to type your final copy!
