Welcome to Grade 11 University Biology!

What do we do in SBI3U? 5 units:

Diversity of Living Things

Genetic Processes

Animals Structure and Function

Plants Anatomy, Growth and Function

EVALUATION – where your marks come from Knowledge and Understanding - 30% unit tests Thinking (Inquiry) - 30% Labs Communication - 20% Oral and written work Application (Making Connections) - 20% Case studies 70%

EVALUATION – where your marks come from Final Exam - 20% During exam period, 2 hours long, covers all units Performance Task - 10% During class time, covers one or more units Lab and research skills learned throughout the course 30%

Exam and Summative Course Work: Knowledge/Understanding Thinking Communication Application

E = good marks Learning Skills Responsibility – homework completion; lab work Independent Work – focus on the task in class without prompts; works to end of period Organization – submits work on time; comes to class with materials; ready to learn Collaboration - lab work, group work Initiative – starts work promptly; Q and A’s Self Regulation – class behaviours; perserverence (never gives up!) Classroom Expectations Respect each other, the equipment and property in this room and the teacher Please don’t eat or drink in class (some exceptions). Water is acceptable. No electronic devices during lessons, quizzes, or tests. Be on time and prepared for class.

Attendance Expectations Class starts at the bell and ends at the bell. You are late if you arrive after the bell. Open your books etc. and be ready to start.

Handing in Assignments A due date is given for every assignment. If you cannot submit your assignment on time, please talk to me….I am reasonable ... to an extent.

What Happens If You Hand An Assignment in Late with NO VALID REASON NOTE: A reason is only valid if: You have talked to me at least a DAY BEFORE the assignment is due. You have a note from a parent or guardian explaining why it is late. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO COME IN TO FINISH THE ASSIGNMENT A deduction of marks may result for late assignments

UNIFORM Wear it – it’s not up for debate.

A Note on Plagiarism All assignments must be completed INDIVIDUALLY. If you work with a friend, you must each use your OWN WORDS. Copying and pasting information from the internet or copying from books is UNACCEPTABLE. SUMMARIZE the information into your own words. If you choose to plagiarize, you will be required to redo the assignment or an alternative assignment. Your parents/ guardian will be notified. A penalty may be assigned.

You don’t have to be as smart as Sheldon to obtain an outstanding mark in 3U Biology. However the more you study, the EASIER this course is. It is hard for those who are unprepared.
