ADOPTION OF NEW TECHNOLOGY BY THE INDUSTRY REQUIRING (LESS WATER PER UNIT OF PRODUCTION ) Replacement of natural draft cooling towers by induced draft cooling towers resulting in water conservation of about 1500M/year. Replacement of conventional air cooling system (water spray) by CELDEK cooling pads resulting in water conservation of about 2500 M/year. Switching over to waterless (Non flushing) urinals in a phased manner. Installation of auto level control switches in sumps and overhead tanks.

9 Water conservation Reduction in potable water consumption 28% in last 9 years Conserving 40% of potable water annually by recycling No waste water is discharged outside. Makes Bangalore Complex a Zero Discharge Unit. Water consumption in million ltrs

Conservation of fresh water by use of treated wastewater BEL has an agreement with M/s Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board to buy one million Litres of water everyday from their sewage treatment plant. As such we are buying the tertiary treated sewage from the BWS&SB, Yelahanka sewage treatment plant. This will in turn save one million Litres of water every day which will be indirectly available to the community at large.

Environmentally sustainable society

22 Environmental Sustainability has become the next great challenge along India ’ s development path. Environmental institutions are trying to cope with increasing pressures of rapid growth. Public demand for cleaner environment has been a challenging task. Impressive initiatives in Environmental Awakening and good practice by various players are being adopted. The priority is to scale up these good practices across the country and reverse environmental degradation. THE WAY AHEAD…
