2. 2 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group Making Progress Some progress toward implementation on 49 out of 58 recommendations in 2009 Climate Protection Plan. There are programs and activities underway in MCG & County agencies. Progress fairly evenly distributed throughout the various categories comprising the Climate Protection Plan. Clear gap in education and outreach efforts

3. 3 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group Making Progress Departments of General Services/Technology Services –Replaced light switches in EOB and COB with motion sensors to lower electricity consumption. (EEC-2) –Transit anti-idling SOP and automatic idle down feature for Ride On fleet. (T-9) –Building occupant awareness campaign. (EEC-2) –All County purchased laptops and desktops are EPEAT Gold registered. (EEC-1)

4. 4 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group Making Progress Department of Transportation –Bus Rapid Transit Study to be completed during FY11. (T-3) –Parking Supply and Pricing Study to be completed by April. (T-1) –Draft RFP for car sharing program in Parking Lot District facilities. (T-2) –Completed engineering work on 11 school neighborhoods to increase safety for walkers and bikers. (T-5, T-7) –Developing educational programs at 41 schools to increase pedestrian activity and safety among drivers near schools. (T-7)

5. 5 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group Making Progress Department of Environmental Protection –Secured grant funding for and implemented Programmable Thermostat Giveaway Program. (EER-1, EER-2)) –Signed power purchase agreement for Solid Waste Transfer Station. (RE-3) –Organized non-profit clean energy purchasing consortium. (RE-6) –Submitted grant application to DOE to establish a “Green Bank” to finance multi-family retrofits. (EEC-7)

6. 6 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group Making Progress M-NCPPC and WSSC –Master planning is focused on sustainable, smart growth (LUP-3) –New CR Zone approved to give more options (LUP-2) –Water Resources Plan to be completed this year (LUP-5) –WSSC is the 5 th largest purchaser of clean, renewable energy in the US. (RE-1) –WSSC selected the contractor for the biogas/combined heat and power feasibility study at Seneca and Piscataway WW treatment sites. (RE-7)

7. 7 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group Making Progress MCPS and Montgomery College –Eight MCPS schools with geo-exchange systems; 10 in design or construction (RE-1, RE-2) –MCPS is the first school system in the MD/VA region to host large-scale solar PV systems; eight schools with solar PV. (RE-3) –Montgomery College purchases 75% of its electricity from Wind Generation through RECs. (RE-1) –Four new Montgomery College buildings in either design or construction to be LEED Gold. (EEC-2)

9. 9 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group 80% Reduction Goal – Where Are We? Achieving the interim building energy efficiency goals, and implementing other viable short term actions, will achieve approximately 12 percent of the total reductions needed to meet long term goal. –Half of the County’s homeowners reduce their annual energy consumption by 25% by 2020 –The commercial and multi-family building sector reduces its energy consumption by 25% by 2020 –The use of private vehicles to transport students to and from the public schools is reduced 50% by 2020 –1,500 trees are planted annually

10. 10 Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group 80% Reduction Goal – Assumptions It’s important to remember that the 80% reduction goal was based on: –Federal and state actions in addition to County actions –Technological breakthroughs –Infrastructure development –Cultural changes
